New Laptop

Just ordered up a HP ZD 8000 laptop with all the goodies.Helen has a HP Pavilion about 2 years old that we normally use on the road but she has so much stuff on it that there is not enough room for my stuff and it is her PC and I don't like the way she organizes it and I don't like netscape..But I do like Helen a lot so thought I had better get my own Laptop and avoid martial conflict. We also have our seperate desk tops. The conflict is between Me,the hardware guy and her the software gal.Actually it works out pretty well. When something goes wrong with the hardware she screeches RICHARD and when I have software problems I yell HELEN. Does anyone have the Zd 800 and if so are you stasified???

Rich,
I'm sure glad you clarified you like Helen a lot as I was beginning to wonder there for a minutes. LOL. Congrats on the new laptop. I know what you mean about the conflict between software and hardware people and this past two years, I had to be both. Not easy but I did understand both sides after a while. I had been primarily a software person before.
Happy trails and surfing.....................

Rich, I enjoyed your post, got a big chuckle out of it. Kinda reminds me of us except I'm both the hardware and software guy. So, I just get "WHAT IS THIS" and "WHY IS IT DOING THIS" and a few other choice tidbits.

I have the widescreen zv5000 version of your laptop and am very pleased with it. My truck has it's own HP laptop. Vicki's is a Toshiba. I also have a Sony but it's been dying for awhile so has become a Spider Solitaire machine until such time as it finally expires. One thing I really like is the button to turn off the blasted touchpad. Don't forget you probably have a button above the F8 key that turns off wireless, also. If it aint lit you can't get wifi.

I saw the 8000 model at best buy and played with all the goodies..Got it for 200.00 less on line at the HP website with more options, blue tooth for example. I am also a software guy my job in my previous life required that..had to write a lot of M&D's(maintenance and diagnostics programs)never liked programming/software do not have the Patience.Helen still works at the FAA ( flight data specialist) and has a fair technicial backround. She is very good software person.i think it is a female thing)..Females tend to think in a much more logical manner than guys and have way more paitence(yes they do guys)When we have a database or spreadsheet to formulate I sit in front of the PC and curse while Helen will pump it out. There are a lot of things I do better than her and she will tell me what they are when she wants me to do them???

Boy, does this sound familiar! When you can't print or something does work right its STEVE! Being the fix it man at school for 20 years I guess I'm the hardware person here. We have a wireless network, and Mac desktop and a 17" powerbook for camping etc. Realy enjoy technology when it works but it is a pain in the #@&$$$$ when it doesn't!

Rich,

It went from France to Germany?? No flights from France to USA??

This reminds me of a VERY funny story. A dear friend of mine, lives in The Netherlands, she (and hubby) are lovers of the game of golf. She is VERY good, she won't admit it to me, but I think she may be among the best in the country, she is the best at their local club.

ANYYYWAYYYY, she wanted a new golf club and found it online, in Dallas Texas. She orders. She starts watching the tracking. It goes to KC. Then it goes to San Francisco. Then it goes to like Hawaii, and then to NEW ZEALAND!!!

Someone put the wrong code on the delivery order.

So, she watches it go from New Zealand to Hawaii to San Fran to KC to NY to Amsterdam.

She reports this to me every 12 hours, the first portion she cannot figure out why it is going to San Fran and Hawaii.

I will admit that I was a bad friend, even tho I supported her via email, I was sitting at my computer and laughing till tears ran. Course, she knows I have a black sense of humor and how my lap top went to Dallas a couple of times for repairs, and one time on the way home decided it needed a Florida vacation. OH, the guy that got mine in Florida, I got his in Michigan! So, I had earned the right to laugh.

Hope you get your new laptop very soon and enjoy!!!! (Oh, Al and I have to have seperate computers, for much the same reasons, he does stuff one way, I another. He is great at getting the hardware and software to run, but he cannot run a word processor for flip! HA HA)

Rich, seeing that many airlines no longer feed you, your suggestion could have merit?? Wonder if it would be cheaper??

So, the important question, do you have it yet, and how do you like it??

It is at the FEDEX facility in Cleveland, Ohio, which really is not in Cleveland, Ohio but about 15 miles from here.My guess is Monday delivery. I never gave it a thought when I ordered the Laptop..Hewlett-Packard a good old American name..However upon closer inspection nowhere on the HP web site does it say where they are..there is a 800 number to call..I'll bet the person on the other end of the line is not from around here.... Looked up FEDEX shipping for that pkg..Here to there..5 day delivery...231.99 US not including any import duties or other Fee's.

Had a heck of a time getting the MOC to work on this new laptop. I was unable to log in, kept throwing be back to the log in page. The only thing different on this PC vs my desktop is this one uses windowsXP pro and the DT is windows XP home edition.Turns out for some reason XP pro put the MOC on my restricted sites list and blocked all cookies which are needed for proper operation.I had accept all cookies set under privacy settings and it took me awhile to find out where and why XPro did this???

Glad you finally got your laptop. You will get use to it. I ran XP Pro at work and then would come home to XP home at home. You have to kind of put two categories in your brain computer. I do like XP Pro better though. Good luck and have fun!
Happy trails.....................

In the quest to make the PC "safer" for the general user they overdo it..You need certain cookies and you need certain pop-ups for proper operation. The fact that XP pro restricted the MOC probably means there is something in the script that XP pro does not like.Fortunately you can determine your own settings..once you find out how to do it. We will be "testing" the new PC starting today on our"wine" trip.Using the GPS and checking for WIFI.By the way..I am a School bus driver..just got my new route for the school year..plugged the addresses into the GPS and let it plot my route..how hi tech can you get???

Rich, just go into IE and tell it to allow cookies from www.forumco.com . Then you can set the security as tight as you want and MOC will work. Tools/Internet Options/Privacy/Sites and there you can tell it to allow cookies from forumco. Works for me.
