HEAT PUMP thump

ok we are now in the desert around Yuma AZ.. the daytime temps reach 70's during the day and dip into the low fifties at night. We have been using the heat pump in our 17 305RL HC and pretty much leaving the thermostat on heat pump mode during the day when the temps rise which doesn't kick the heat pump on during the day.
Now this question is for all you air conditioner/heat pump engineers, techs. What makes the unit make a clicking/lightly audible thumping sound when not engaged during the day when the temps reach 70-75 degrees? The heat pump works just great but the clicking while idle has me puzzled.
