Was that Ammonia as in smelled like maybe it had been used in cleaning or ammonia as in escaping from some system? As you investigate, may I suggest you make sure there is adequate ventilation. Ammonia is toxic and in higher concentrations can be debilitating or fatal.

Sorry to say it, but I have heard that ammonia smell is a sure sign of a leaking fridge. Unless you have a leaking bottle of ammonia cleaner, the fridge is about the only likely source for an ammonia smell. Keep an eye on the fridge temperature. Hope it is not the case, but you may be in the market for a new refigerator.
Good luck!

CHECK YOUR WARRANTIES!
Frig warranty may be different than the one from the coach.
I agree with OntMOnt in every thing he said. Good luck

My friend, OntMont, is right again. Our first fifth wheel was a used Prowler Regal. We started smelling that 'amonia aroma' which got worse. Long story made short: we had to replace the entire refrigerator. We were able to get a "rebuilt model" for much less than an entirely new one, but it had to be replaced.

Yep....ammonia smell is from the refrig and That's not good. The same smell happened to my friend in Florida this year and he had to have the whole back of the refrig replaced. Check your warranty and call the manufacture.

I just registered our Dometic refrigerator on line and the warranty was for three years.

I do remember that the warranty on our "rebuilt" refrigerator was also for three years. It was still working fine when we traded for our first new fifth wheel, a Jayco Eagle.
Note to Wifeofdano: We had 20 guests here for a grand Fourth of July barbeque. One of those friends snapped that photo in our kitchen, so it is really 'up to date'.

Does your still function? Dometic was pretty good in replacing the "guts" of our ref. when it died---my wife accused me of doing terrible things when I was in the bathroom! Did have to take it to a repair place who could tell tDometic that "yes, the ref. was dead." Took about three hrs. for them to replace the whole back part of our ref.

Nice picture, Gyro!
We have a smell when we open the 'frig. I cleaned the frig and we're waiting to see if it continues but I'm curious about the smell. Do you smell this ammonia smell even when the door is closed?
We get the smell when we open the door. I didn't find any culprits when I clean, but there was something on the bottom that I didn't recognize . Got that makes it sound like our 'frig was really dirty.....

Well, our problem is solved! It was a brand new tub of off brand Cool Whip type topping. Guess it doesn't last long outside the freezer. Anyway, we have a clean 'frig and a sweet smelling one that works great.

Judy,
Thanks. Kimmrg took it the other day.
As to your Unauthorized Chemo-biological Experiment in your fridge...I'm glad you found it wasn't an ammonia leak!
Whew!
