new to dish - question

As a newbie (to satellite rving, that is) couple who have decided that we will take our DirecTV box with us and try using a satellite dish on the road, would any experienced rv satellite dish users mind cutting and pasting the eBay link below and see if this looks feasible for starting out? Thanks in advance.

I have something similiar to this but I think I got it cheaper, maybe it was because I bought dish separate from tri-pod. But that is not my purpose - right from the get-go I found that the short tri-pod would blow over very easy so be thinking of some ingenious ways of tie down. Myself - I bought (3) 4 ft long pcs of pvc pipe that would slip over the legs and raised it a little higher - help to clear trees or even go over the top of the monty plus it gave it a wider footprint so that it was very hard to tip over. Don't get me wrong a strong wind will still blow it over.

Thanks Indy. So do I understand you're putting yours on top of the RV. I see a lot of photos where people are just putting them on the tripod on the ground.

No, I do not put on top. Most of the time I am camping around trees so I have the dish out away from the camper. That is where the extra length of cable comes in handy. By the way, I thought the shipping charges were a little high on that e-bay link.

You might want to look at this dish mount. It's a little pricey but very adaptable and takes up very little storage room

Capt We use a standard tripod and a dish bought from asat. dealer put it together myself and have 75.00 tied up in the whole package very simple to figure out we are on dish network so we need the two LNB dish set up I like the tripod and long coax so we can most always get to a clear sky while others around us are under a tree just my experiance hope it helps any questions just ask and I'll be happy to walk you through the set up

We just bought another dish for our DirecTV hookup so we didn't have to take the dish down from the stick house. Well smarty me decided to get the triple one with HVD (is that right) capabilities to be prepared for the future. The problem is it is top heavy and too heavy for the tripod from CW so we ended up screwing it to a piece of wood and it works great. Laid a couple of bricks on the wood to keep it down and worked really good for 3 weeks. We found several naughty children tipping our tripod over!
Happy trails.........................

We found one on E-bay for our Direct TV (we previously had Dish) from some outfit selling for Circuit City (their take-outs). We paid less than $20 and it works great! We already had the stand.

This is a link to a tutorial on satellite TV reception and RVs: http://www.ccis.com/home/mnemeth/sat.htm

The tripod the writer recommends (from Radio Shack or other electronic parts houses) is cheap, sturdy and stable.

Edited to remove a period (See next post)

Bill and Mariana,

I couldn't get the URL to work.

OOps, and then I took the period (.) out of the end and it worked fine.

Thanks for the information!

I just salvaged a good used DishPro 500 dish from a neighbor who went with a cable co. Added to a C.W. acquired Winegard tripod and a length of RG-6, we take our second room receiver with us when we hit the road. BTW - I am going to do the PVC leg extensions on the tripod - great idea. The aiming is not that difficult after a couple tries.
Wife and I man the walkie talkies to quietly zoom in on the aim.
Out among the trees - we almost always have to locate the dish ~50' from the coach. With the supplied screw in anchor and short bungee cord, I have yet to loose the dish in the wind.

I went to my local DISH TV installer and asked if he had an old dish he wouldn't mind parting with. He did and just gave it to me. It was a Direct TV dish but works for DISH also. It has only one LNB but is easier to set up and gets most of the channels we watch. I then mounted it on a PVC pipe mount made by directions some nice RVer put on the internet. I wish I new how to lead you to the directions, but I don't. You might want to google "RV dish mount" or "PVC dish mount". It mounts upside down from what you normally see and lays fairly flat so doesn't tip over easily.
Good Luck, Ken

Direct tv gave us a free dish when I told them we would be traveling and not a permanent adress any more. When they delivered the dish, I also bought a tripod from them for $40, it even has a built in level on it. the whole system works real well. We are taking our tivo receiver on the road with us.
