Almost Lost Spare Tire
On our return trip from a week + in the ShowLow AZ. area we stopped at a Mickey D's in Williams, AZ. I was sitting in the truck with the hounds and DW was getting some vittles. There was a gas station/tire shop across the street and a fellow walked over towards the truck and said, you are about to lose the spare tire off your FW, pull it over to the shop and we can look at it.
Sure enough it had backed off about 2 inches. I always check wheel torque, tire pressure tighten screws for cabinets and drawers but I never thought about the spare.
I slipped the gentlemen a 10 spot which he said was NOT necessary, but considering the consequences, was a cheap fix.
Guess it was finally my lucky day.

Hi Ray... Noticed the same thing on the monty back in June. Was checking under the trailer and just touched the spare and to my surprise it started to swing. From now on everytime I check the air & torque, the spare will also be checked

Some members have reported actually losing the spare. Several have actually installed a safety device. I believe it is/was some sort of cabling. Perhaps someone else will remember the exact thread.

I was one of those who "lost" the spare. I now have it double cabled and padlocked. We don't know where we lost it, just that it fell off somewhere between Albequerque, NM and Lakewood, NM.

We used some heavy duty cargo tie downs and secured the Spare.

I use a cargo strap to keep the spare in place, this also takes the load off the lifting unit when going down the road.

A camphost saw mine was loose while I was driving thru the campground and stopped to tell me about it. It's on my check list now too !!

If you do secure it, just make sure you don't make a worse hazard by running a cable or chain around the tire and through the center hole. If it falls out of it's mount but can't get away because it's tied on, it will beat the underside or your rig like a naughty stick or busted drive shaft before you even realize it. That tire standing vertical does not fit under your rig, and will tear out the belly, pull down crossmembers, and bust tanks, not to mention may end up in your living room.
A strap running across the whole tire works best. If you run a cable, run it around the tire facing the front of the rig so it can just drop and drag.

I haven’t looked at ours very close. I think maybe it would be a good thing to do!
On Edit: I checked out the spare tire this morning and everything looked hunky dory!

We spent a month in Baja a couple years ago and were advised to lock our spare tires on as they were easily removed and had a habit of dissapearing.
If you've ever driven thru Mexico and noticed the condition of most of the vehicle tires you can understand why!!!
Ever since then my PU and FW spares are locked on with a PU truck spare tire cable lock.
On my '09 2955 there's a welded brace at the top of the spare tire bracket that the cable fits over nicely. It also serves as a retainer in case anything fails. The spare may not be tight up against the bracket but that $200 tire will still be there.

And yet ANOTHER good reason to belong to this excellent forum. I can't tell you how many good suggestions and ideas I have gotten from this forum, and how many headaches it has saved me. Some things just don't occur to you.....until someone mentions it on the forum. Then it's like.....DUH!!!!! Why didn't I think of that?????  MOC rules..........

I don't know what forum I should be on to ask about how to take of the decals on the Monty I just bought a 2004 #3575 and some of decals edges are comming loose any help would be appreaited.
