Sue, it's a brand new tank, barely a month old. It did it with the old tank, too.

Bill, I just got out of my chair and looked. No vent pipe visible anywhere in there.

By the way, the food stored under there is canned goods, totally sealed.

I guess we'll just have to trade this rig in for one that doesn't have the odor.

It's just an occasional odor and for relatively brief times.

See another Montana or Mountaineer on the road? Flash lights twice, it might be one of us!

Dave, When we are hooked up to a sewer in the campground, we leave the galley and tub gray tank valves open. We make a point to not intentionally put any food scraps down the kitchen sink - of course some gets in there doing dishes. Before we get ready to dump the black water, we close both gray's to collect enough water to rinse them out and to flush the drain after dumping the black tank.
I was leaving my grey tanks both closed to flush the hose after the black tank. I will open the galley tank and try to put the cover back on the sink to see what happens and then post back here...

This smell started just a few days after coming off the line at Goshen. We were dumping this tank every day or every other day. We don't notice any smell when leaving the cover off and walking into the unit after we've been gone for a while. Sounds like we are having the exact same problems as Steve is - only our 3400 was less than a week old when it started doing this - no problem with the shower/vanity tank. And we have been very careful - I think - of letting any food get down the sink.

I like the bleach idea, too. Still interested in the new vents. We'll see what happens at the Rally...

I just ordered one of these devices. The only time we have noticed a black tank odor is when the rig sits unused for a while.
It usually goes away after we start using it again, but I can see where some would start overloading chemicals in a panic to stop the smell.
What I would like to see at the very least would be good ventillation going down the road so when we arrive at our destination we don't get greeted my that wonderful aroma when setting up.

EDIT - spelling corrections...

We just installed that sewer odor thingy. It is a easy install. I completely removed the OEM vent down to the membrane. That was the hardest part as there were 6 screws holding the base to the roof all of different sizes and different screw heads. The RV 360 was a perfect fit on the black pipe.

Let it be known that I did the install on my own although Helen strongly objected and would not leave the driveway or go inside the house till I was finished. She made me put on dark sunglasses so I would not be blinded by the white roof and walk off it......Women......

Steve,

Sue's probably got the cure. Your trap has bacteria in it, they all do. If it smells like rancid water (rotten eggs), then just a cap full of bleach in the trap will cure it. Let the bleach sit for a while in the trap.

HTH,

Ken

Ken (and Sue), thanks. That is exactly what it smells like. We have no bleach at this time but will get some.

Question on black tank odors. I have only had this once, last November. Ran into some below 30 weather for a few days. Could it have simply been the cold retarding the chemicals from working? Would it have helped to put more chemicals in?

We've spent a month where it rarely got above freezing and a week last winter where the high for the week was 14 so I don't think that's it. Odors from the black tank seem to be more prevalent in hot weather, at least what we've seen. Maybe the tank needs a good flushing?

I bought the vent also.
We leave our Monty at a lake year round and we notice an odor when we first get there sometimes, mostly hot months. I too hate heights and my wife stays out there and watches just like Ricks.
I wonder if she really thinks she could catch me or maybe she just wants to see the bounce.
Anyway, all I need to take up there is the kit, screw driver & cordless drill & bits? Some kind of Glue & sand paper? I have to bring some stuff from home, thats why the question.
Thanks in advance!

Mike,

I didn't need any glue, or sandpaper. All you need is the cordless drill, a drill bit and the 360 vent.

You will have to see how much of the black pipe sticks up above the OEM vent once you lift the cover. There was not enough to fit the vent over so I had to completely remove the OEM vent down to the roof membrane. Since my 3400 is but 3 months old that Grey sealant was still pliable and easy to remove.. yours may not be if you need to remove it. It took me 2 hours to do the install 1:45 mins of it was in Removing the old sealant and resealing the new vent.

Mike, if you're flushing it that much then that's not the problem. That's more than I flush ours.

Yes, my wife doesn't understand while it takes me so long to flush out the tank. I am determined that I will not have a black water problem of any kind....maybe that is why I had the odor...I just should not be so determined but do the same thing:>) I have another Nov trip this year, I will have to see how it goes. I am just puzzled.

Dave and Cheryl, I bet your are smelling the sink itself, when you use the covers. I remember when our unit was new and I would put the covers on and when I took them off I would smell a funny smell. I didnt do anything and use the covers all the time and that funny smell went away.
