Saw more than a few towing geniuses today as we towed on interstate 84. Speed limit 80, so you know what was going on. Lots of trailers towing between 75-80. The first fifth wheel smoked by me doing 80...and half hour down the road he's off the side with a rear tire in shreds. Not more than ten minutes after that, another fifth passes me doing about 75 and later on he is beside the road after chunks of his tire departed and littered the road. Moral of this story- your neck will get sore from you shaking your head sideways and it's hard not to let a smile start to form on your face. John

Watch carefully every time a fiver is passing me at insane speeds, hoping he does not blow a tire next to us. What a beating for those rigs.

I hear ya John,
One of my Co-workers just purchased a new fifth wheel and was telling me about their first outing in it. They made a trip down to FL and he was so happy that his truck was able to pull it at 75-80 mph with no problems. He was all smiles until until he found out that the speed rating for the tires was only 65 MPH and exceeding that would damage the tires. Hopefully he didn't damage the tires and he will slow down a bit.

I am sorry to hear of the trouble s some of our fellow RVer's are having with tire blowouts. I am sure the speed is not good for them unless they are rated for that speed but I would also suspect that the tires are not Sailun's or Goodyears H rated tires. I have seen plenty of tires grenade that were not being subjected to speed abuse. I think it is a combination of tire age, air pressure, quality of tire, amount of weight the tire is carrying and also speed.

I pull faster than some and get passed by others. My last blowout was on a truck tire so I would think age was the culprit and not speed.

All of that is correct, but the damage can be done before it gets to the dealer. Coming home from the National Rally late at night we have been frequently passes by Montana's going 80-90 and have seen Montana's drug over curbs at rest area's and truck stops. Montana's don't have a corner on haulers treating them like they stole them, but it's just Montanas I pay attention to.

We are out here were the speed limit om I-40 is 75 MPH and we are passed by all kinds of Rv's when we are solo in the truck doing 75 or better.

Driving down 435 around KC last night, saw a 1 ton dually come flying off the entrance ramp pulling a 40' + rig. Figured I'd pull up beside him in a sort distance, as I was traveling about 75. The guy pulled away from me and within 5 miles, he was almost a mile ahead of me. Unbelievable.

I probably drive faster than some but I also get passed so I must be a middle of pack kind of driver. I do remember pulling the fifth-wheel down to Denver from Wyoming years ago on a freeway posted at 75 MPH. That speed was for everyone not just cars. I can guarantee I did not like having to go a bit faster than my comfort level to avoid being run over. I am sure that the 22.5 big rig tires are not speed rated for the 80/85 plus MPH they were going. I do know that the road had some signage on a long grade that stated left lane must maintain 70MPH. I eased into it and within a minute or two all we saw was tire smoke and rigs going every which way as people had to dynamite their brakes. We didn't actually come to a complete stop but we were down to less than five MPH. Figured we see a demolished rig as we slowly got going. No wrecked rig to be seen just skid marks everywhere. Only thing I can think was somebody in the right lane got tired of being behind a semi not doing 75/80 and whipped out in front of everyone going that fast causing everyone to have to do a panic stop.

I don't have the correct answer for the perfect towing speed but I can tell when in my opinion it is to fast or sometimes to slow. :-) . I have enough to worry about while pulling the fifth-wheel with out worrying about tires blowing out.

Happy roads to all my fellow RVers out there.

We travel around 62 to 65 and no faster. It's not how fast you can pull it, it's how fast you can stop it when necessary. I've had to make two panic stops and if I were going faster, there would have been accidents.

Under the wright conditions I will pull my camper as fast as the law allows +5 MPH. My camper and truck tires are rated at 107 MPH and with my truck that would be easy but I wouldn't do that. I will pull it at 75 80 when conditions permit.

62 to 65 here also. Yes, we could go faster, but the risk just isn't worth it. You just don't know when someone is going to do something stupid in front of you, or even along side. The first panic stop will wake you up for sure! So what's the hurry? We just want to get there safely so we do so at a reasonable pace. Safe travels.

Disclaimer, this is just my MHOP. Anybody who towes an RV at 80mph is crazy. I don't care what tires or wether they have upgrated to disk brakes.

When I first moved to Ca and had a real job I was a professional truck driver. I drove heavy duty professional equipment both 40 footers (no 53 footers then) and sets of doubles. I am here to tell you these RV rigs don't have the suspension or the brakes (both truck and trailers) to stop In a panic situation. What we need to remember if you run into something the next vehicle in line behind you is a 16,000 pound RV.

How sad would it be to get to the Pearly Gates and have to tell St Peater you were run over by your own Montana?

We are retired slow down and enjoy the trip. Just saying is all.

Interstate 5 between Redding and Sacramento is getting worse. CHP ticketing guys for being overweight, I prefer they cited the guys going 75. It's strict 55 towing law is seldom observed in my opinion. It's crazy these guys, most appear overweight Toyhaulers, but had a fellow Montana owner pass me doing 75-80 last week. Gee what's the hurry! I like many of you, 65 max is nice speed on good highways.

Thanks for adding "on good highways"! I groused long and hard about that stupid 55 towing speed in CA, but after an hour on their roads I realized that was pushing the envelope!

Same here. Much faster is dangerous regardless of what tires are mounted.

When I worked I drove faster and got frustrated with all of you who were creating obstacles. Now that I'm retired I am one of you. Weird how I'm not in such a big hurry anymore.

He has a point if you are only going to drive 300 miles a day drive as slow as you wont to but if you have a job that is not an option.

And...I can now join the club of those who see the abuse of brand new rigs being delivered to dealerships. I-80, 82, 84, 90 and I-5 all had new rigs pass me at better than 70. Only one stayed in the 65-70 range. No wonder tires blow.
