Water heater switch
I bought a 2010 295RKD yesterday, when I got home with it late last night I plugged it in and could hear the hot water heater kick on. Luckily it had water in it but cannot find the switch to turn it off...I'm new here but let's just say I'm advanced in life experience. Can anyone point me where to find the mysterious hidden switch...we just upgraded from a 98 Cardinal..... this Montana is so much nicer, but much different setup.

In addition to the on/off switch in your control panel, there should be a switch on the water heater itself. It doesn't stop it running on gas, but will prevent it running on electric.

On mine it is a small black rocker switch in the lower left corner of the water heater almost hidden by the gas line.

X2 for Jimcol. I just recently replaced my rocker switch in my 2006. Easy job but you do need to know where it is.

Ok..thanks.....but the switch in the panel is off... will it run on electric with the switch on outside?
I thought when you turned the panel switch off it shut down both electric and gas, but I'm guessing I'm wrong.

On mine, the panel switch inside the 5'er only shuts off the gas operation of the water heater. To kill the electric side you need to turn off the rocker switch or kill it at the circuit breaker in your main breaker box.

We have 2 switches in our panel, 1 for gas and 1 for electric. However, to get the electric to work I must also turn on the switch on the water heater. It is a great way to not accidentally turn on the electric and burn out the element if there is no water in the heater.

Since you heard it kick on, I assume that it started up on propane. Can't really hear it start up on electric.
You don't say the year of yours. Older models, like my 2007, only have one switch inside. And that is for propane. Electric is controlled by the small black switch on the water heater itself. If you have two switches inside, one for propane and one for electric, then both the inside electric switch and the outside electric switch must be on to operate on electric.
And you can operate on both electric and propane simultaneously if you need faster recovery time such as when the air temp, and therefore the incoming water temp, is cold.

We have a 2020 331RL and ours will only heat on propane. Checked element it’s good, breaker and switched on. Any ideas where to go next ?

Time to get out the VOM and start diagnosing. The most common problems are the little black rocker switch inside the heater (be sure it is turned on and passing voltage) and the thermostat.
There are several trouble shooting documents in the Files section under "Systems"
https://www.montanaowners.com/forums...rt=name&page=2
Look for the Suburban manuals. If you have an Atwood, it is similar and there is a manual for it in the "Manuals" sub-section https://www.montanaowners.com/forums...?do=file&id=54
