Locked out

I get home from a trip with my 2020 3813 Monty and door wont open. Was not locked by us. I just closed door hopped in truck and headed home. Tried every trick I know to get door to open but no. Called dealer told service guy what was happening, he was stumped. He said, well the door window is the cheapest to replace and my reply was ''I don't think so'' my wife wont fit through that small hole. You pull out on the door handle and you feel no resistance. Handle pulls out but it feel like it's doing nothing. I drill a one half inch hole in the black plastic right beside the handle and I can see the slide that should move when you pull the handle but it's not moving. Poke a flat head screwdriver in and move slide and door opens. Now here's the good part, door now works perfect. I am suppose to have a new door mechanism on the way. I am putting this info on here just in case this happens to someone else. Best way I could come up with to get in.

Can't blame the service guy. Talking over the phone, he had no way of knowing the right size window to break.

In the old days there was a couple of screws in the mechanism that would come loose and fall out, maybe there still are.

Gonna let the dealer worry why it happen. Real question is how did moving the slide make it start working right again.

scuba dude, same thing happened to us on our very first outing in our 2020 295RL. the wife and I stepped out to go for a walk, I forgot something, turned around to open the door and it was locked. Fortunately, our neighbor had a Montana and his key, by chance, unlocked our door. I now keep a spare key hidden away.

I had a field tech tell me to never flip the red lever and close the door - said you'll be locked OUT. So thinking someone might have hit the night lever and prevented re-entry. Not sure, just FYI

scuba dude...........thanks for sharing and your fix to get the door open. Fortunately sounds like a lower cost fix than breaking and replacing a window.

I had this happen to me also. Screws had fallen out. And I think the part is with the red lever thing too. I was lucky tho. For some reason my rear sliding emergency exit window wasn't locked and my adult daughter was with us. She was able to squeeze in the back and I gave her the screwdrivers she needed to remove the handle/lock. The screw(s) were loose inside, so I reattached them and all is good.

We locked ourselves out of the factory lock. You can accidentally lock it from inside, then walk out and close the door, locking yourself out. Had to get a locksmith to unlock it. Bought an RVLock to prevent from ever happening again.

My experience with this, I crawled up laundry chute from storage compartment with tools and disassembled door lock. Connecting link from handle to slide disconnected. As my rig is an 03 monty, I elected to replace handle mechanism.

It sounds like some folks do not know there are 2 locks on the door. The lock that locks just the handle and the lock that operates the deadbolt that is also operated by the red handle. All you had to do was use your key in each of them. Those that say they close the red handle and leave have a completely messed up door. The red handle engages the deadbolt, you can NOT close the door if that bolt is activated. I have had 2 doors and 3 locks like that, and every non-rv door I ever seen with a deadbolt works the same.

Ours works the exact same way. I never lock the top lock just the deadbolt. When It cools down enough to keep the door open I'm going to see if I can disable the top lock entirely.

I have a 2020 3813 also with the exact same problem since the 2nd week. I can’t say why other than the fact that it must be misadjusted, well it works just fine if you open the door with your right hand, seriously.

On my Montana 2955rl I just opened the cargo door and got in through the trap door at the top of the stairs.

All of you went about it wrong. Like the reply before mine, I simply op-ed the cargo door and pushed the laundry hamper up and out of the way
The flopped back the hatch cover and grabed a beer and unlocked the door, easy peasy.
Sorry you went through drilling holes and calling a locksmith.
