Question Tire Rub

When we parked our 2008 3400RL after our last outing I noticed a black mark on the driver side fender that looked like the left rear tire (Sailun S637ST 235/85) had come rubbed on the fender. Was this likely caused by hitting a bump or should I be looking for something more serious, none of the other tires left marks.

Same fifth wheel 2008 3400RL, same black mark , except on the right side rear tire . It rubbed most likely first time out, hasn't done any harm, that was two years ago. I figure its not going to rub any worse. Forgot about it until I read your post .

I have a new set of MorRyde rubber shear springs in the garage, mine are shot. Will be replacing them in a week or so. That may be a factor on the tire rubbing.
My fifth wheel seems to bounce more then it used too. I am thinking the big splits in those shear springs are letting it bounce a lot more , will see if it improves the ride .

One thing I did notice is my Sailun's were taller then my previous Goodyear G614's same size though, 235/85/16. The Goodyears never rubbed that I noticed.

Could be in the rim sizes. Tire dimensions are usually determined by the size of the measuring rim. GY uses 6.5" rim width for the G614. I don't have the numbers for the Sailun tires.

Although my shear springs are not busted, they are cracked pretty deep on both sides of both shear springs. I have heard of them splitting in half, it that what your shear spring did ??.

Not sure if my shear springs have anything to do with the tire rubbing on mine, my fifth wheel is not leaning to one side. Have to wonder if the fatigued or cracked shear springs cause any lose of height if they are still intact.

My neighbor, and friend installed the Sailun S637's on his Montana 235/85/16, and he also has just one tire rubbing. No damage ,but just some black marks on the fender well. Those 235/85/16's are taller.

As said the Sailuns are slightly taller then my previous G614's ,not much 31.7" compared to 32". Both ran on the same rims.

Not sure if that difference or a combination of my shear springs being shot, have something to do with the rubbing, but I have had just the one tire rub, from day one 2 years ago.

The shear springs will sag over time, even if they are not completely broken. I changed mine a while back, thinking one of them had broken, but turned out it was a broken leaf spring pack. Photo is the old next to a new one.

Thanks, that pretty well answers that as far as sag. Did you notice much difference in the ride.

Yes, it did improve things, gained a bit of height, but not as much as I had hoped for, and I think the tires are wearing a bit better.

Certainly worn out shear springs and suspension components can cause the fenders to rub on the tires but I have a much simpler thing to look at. Assuming that all suspension components are in proper working order, it could be as simple as UV light causing the fenders to deform and curve in toward the wheels. I probably invited the problem when I upgraded from LR E Marabombs to LR G G614s. Mine did this on both sides. All it takes to fix it is removing the screw from the center fender support bracket and bending the bracket to force the center of the fender away from the wheels. When you find the "sweet spot" using the hold in the fender as a guide, drill a new hole in the support bracket and reinstall the screw. One one fender I also had to grind away some of the plastic where it wraps under the fender. No problems since.

Same issue on our 2008 3605rl. Shear springs shot. MorRyde says good for 6 to 8 years. Install the wet bolt kits when you do the shear springs (equalizers).

08 3400 RL, had shear springs replaced and wet bolt kit installed. Happy with the results. Same as Rohrman stated above.

Driver side front tire was rubbing also on fender also.

Where are the shear springs located? I have MorRyde 3000 wet bolts and looking around I don't see anything that looks like your picture. I know very little about springs so I may be just not seeing what I'm looking at.

Your newer 3000 suspension does not have them.
