A lot of the problems with duallies is not the tires but that big ole really heavy diesel motor up front. My work truck was a Ford 450 2wheel drive Dually with a bucket. Working for Verizon in Pa. meant we were out in the worst of weather. Even without chains that truck would go fairly well in even 6-8 inches of snow. After that we chained up and nothing would stop that truck. We were on the road even back during our blizzards of 93 where we were getting 15-25 inches of snow and the governor would close the roads to the public. But those were gas trucks. The 4wd will help you get around on snow covered roads but you will have to keep it in 4wd. Otherwise if I was gonna take my dually up north in heavy snow I would first stop at Lowes or some where I could get some pea gravel or even the Ice melt cause sand is usually wet and freezes. Would cost a little bit cause you probably need 500 lbs or better. If you really wanna get around good in deep snow without 4wd you need a truck with skinny tires.

Walt - I'd take the VW for economy. You'll have interstates/4 lanes almost all of the way. I'd get off 95 at exit 104 in VA and catch 207 to 301N (avoiding DC), across the Bay bridge to Centreville. 4 lanes to right near Centreville! If roads are snowy, call me (just across the Bridge) and I'll come help you! MD does pretty well w/snow removal, anyway.

One of the reason we purchased the 08 F-350 was to get 4X4 after being bogged down in the AZ desert with our 05 F-350 2 WD while rock hunting. The dually did well although it is a big truck and not all that well suited for off road.
