Beware of Connecticutt-the tax man cometh

To all of our fellow FTers or LTers....here is a link to a post on Escapees regarding how Conn is taxing RVers...

http://www.rvnetwork.com/index.php?s...07848&p=656570

Pretty frightening what our Great Land is becoming....

We winter in Florida for five months each year and are required to get dog licenses after 90 days. We have seen officials in the park checking dogs. So we pay double for our dogs. Everyone has to have some legal residence, and adhere to the tax liabilities of that state, and should not be put into the position of possibly being double taxed.

Keep those wheels rollin'.
Sad that we have to play games to avoid being overtaxed.

The best thing to do is don't spend any money in CT. and let them know about it. Several years ago Flagstaff, AZ enacted an ordinance prohibiting rv's from parking overnight anywhere but in a park. When contacted by the Escapees concerning this they were told that Flagstaff really didn't care whether rv's came or not. Since then I have made it a point to not spend a dime there and every time we pass through there I let the chamber of commerce know about it.

As I read this article, it appears that the city is the one that is levying the tax. The state of Conn. allows it and therefore, I'm not a fan of this State. However, it seems to me that if one wants to spend 3 months or longer in Conn., they need to ask the RV Park if they reside in a city that is going to tax them. I also find it interesting that the abreviation for the state of Connecticut is "Conn"

I never saw a reason to spend 3 days in Conn much less 3 months! Now I will make it a point not to purchase fuel or anything else when passing through.

We may be in New York this coming season, and after reading all this about CT, I don't even want to pass through. Wouldn't want the chance I would have to stop at a stop sign. Besides, on a map, the state doesn't look big enough to turn around in.

We've been to CT... been to and even dined at Mystic Pizza and we're done with the state - it's too small to spend anymore time there and for more than 3 months time, there's plenty of other places I'd rather be. We liked Rhode Island, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont even more. I just hope I remember that on my next long vacation. Since we've never taken a long vacation, I guess it won't be an issue. Living in California means I probably pay more taxes for things I don't do or use already, but at least it's all staying in one state.

We really feel sorry for you Art. That's why we bailed out last year and became residents (full time RV) of South Dakota. I was raised in Southern Calif, and after 3 years in Army, worked in California, mostly near Fresno, until I retired in 2011. Just too bad there is a lot of family still there, or we wouldn't go back. Just so much to see in the rest of the country.

Is that a county situation on your dog or a state law? We have some friends with a dog planning on spending some retirement time in FL. Just wanting to give them a heads up...

Being a native of Connecticut and resident of Massachusetts, I can attest, with first-hand knowledge, that there is no reason what-so-ever to spend that amount of time in Conn. I love the northeast and will always make this my home, but if you want to spend time in this region, go north, man! It's all in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont! So much to see, so picturesque! Sure there is stuff in Conn. to see, Mystic for example, but 3 months? This is definitely a state to pause in, on the way to somewhere else.

We have heard several horror stories about how states attempt to satisfy their thirst for our money. The previous Ohio governor attempted to declare war on snow birds who chose to live outside the state for just over half a year to avoid Ohio income taxes. His solution was to propose legislation (that was never enacted) to require everyone to pay taxes prorated in the length of the stay in the state. If you spent one week of the year in an Ohio campground, he wanted 1/52nd of your income subject to Ohio income tax laws. We have also heard of a former Minnesota couple who are charged with income tax evasion for going full time and moving out of the state. The state said that they could not give up state residency unless they moved into a stick house or apartment in another state. We keep a log of where we spend every night of the year so that we can prove where we live.

We stay in Conn a lot as our youngest son and family are in Conn. We don't stay three months, never will.

We drove through through and would have spent the night there but could not find a campground near the NY state line so moved and didn't camp with any of those comrades.
