Tcorbitt, the brochure payload numbers is the highest payload of any vehicle of that model. That means no options, etc. If they wanted to be more representative, instead of saying payload is 3,000 they'd say payload is 2300 to 3000, or whatever.

The Fords (2005 and up) are heavier because they have a heavier frame, heavier suspension, and, I think, heavier brakes. So they have stronger components but that causes them to weigh more. Strange, but true.

The max payload for my truck according to the sticker on the door panel is 2,685 lbs.

Gee, maybe after seeing that photo I won't need to get that new F350 after all, I can just take my louvered tailgate off the 2500HD and put my almost new original tailgate back on and just install a hitch on it. Thanks, saved me a bunch of money for the superglide hitch and the new F350. Rving is so much fun.
