2008 F350 Purchase
I ordered an '08 F350 Superduty on Feb. 19 and took delivery on Mar. 29. It is a SRW Crewcab with the 6.4 engine. The truck drives very well, rides great and is very quiet. Sounds like a gas engine when starting it. I have not pulled anything with it yet.
After reading on this and other forums I was getting very nervous about he fuel mileage. My '04 6.0 was getting pretty good mileage and I had not had any problems with it.
To check the highway MPG I reset the on board computer as I got on the interstate at KC and drove to our daughters house SW of Topeka Kansas. A distance of about 60 miles. The road does have some hills(Not big ones, but some moderate) The trip did include two stops for the tool booths. I set the cruise at 70 MPH. The speed thru Topeka was 60 and 65 MPH and about 6 miles of 50 MPH off the interstate. The truck has 156 miles on it. At the end of the trip the computer says the MPG was 18.5. Now some will probably doubt this data but these are the facts.
I was not going to post anything about the truck but after all the negative stuff about Ford I thought I should. A lot of people depend on Ford (Including two of my brother-in-laws pensions).

Bruce, we all think you got a great truck for towing, whether we drive one or not! We also have one of those good for nothing onboard computers in our Monte Carlo and we have never gotten the same mpg as it says we do. To properly check mpg, fill tank at point "A" and then again at point "B" and then figure your mpg by deviding your miles driven by the amount of gallons used and that will give you your actual mpg. You might be suprised and get even better than the computer says you do! Enjoy your new truck and keep us informed on how you progress with the towing. Also as far as any negativity with any Ford product, I think they erased that with this new truck! In case you haven't guessed by now, there might be just a little envy showing up here!

Hi, ours is in at the dealer's but we planned the money for May. We went and tried it out. Drove very nicely, quiet, not smelly. Of course we don't have anything to tow with it yet, LOL, so can't report on that. We'll probably end up picking it up next week, DH wants it NOW, regardless of what our budgeting is. Sue C

Bruce ... My 2000 F350 diesel consistently gets 19.5 mpg empty and 10 - 11.5 pulling my fiver and boat. This is based on fillups as I don't have a computer readout. Your new diesel will "loosen up" around 30000 - 35000 and mileage will yet improve. I don't get the mileage pulling that the Duramax's do, but then I don't have to drive around with a bowtie on my grill either ... sorry Chevy guys, when opportunity arises, one must take it! Ha! I'm sure I'll get many happy returns in later posts. To me, it's all in good fun.

Please do keep us posted on that 6.4 Diesel. We have the X plan price in hand but are a bit leery about the motor. The MPG reports have not been very good. Run a few tanks of fuel through it and report back.

Dieselguy, that is awesome fuel mileage. I have owned nothing but the Trucks with the badge of excellence (Bowtie). I have never gotten that kind of mileage. I did get 19 mph with a gas burner in 03 it was a Z-71 extended cab. With the 2500HD we got11 to 12 towing and 16 to 19 highway. The 3500 we got 9 to 11 towing and 14 to 16 highway. With the Chevy Kodiak 4500 its 10 towing and 11 to 12 highway. Keep in mind we tow very Heavy (Cambridge). Sounds like the Super Duty is doing better than I had been told. Great for you and I think Ford may have a winner. Good Luck...GBY...
P.S. DW also has a Chevy Silverado 1500 1/2 ton short bed and we get about 19 to 20 highway. All our TV's were 4 X 4 except the Chevy Kodiak which is a 2 wheel drive......

Good Luck with the new Ford. I just got mine back from the shop. They repaced the fuel pump, inline fuel heater, and the wiring harness to the heater 877.00. Now runs like new. Mechanic showed me 4 other trucks in the shop 2 fords and 2 Internationals all having problems with the 6.0. I asked about the new 6.4. He told me it is the same basic engine with some external changes. He told me for what he repairs the 7.3 was the best engine Ford ever had andit should easily do 300000 with proper maintanence.
Again good luck with your new TV and many problem free years.
Chuck

Bruce - I would ask that you re-check that same trip the next time you got that way, but use something other than the truck to calculate the mileage. Most I have seen or heard about are off. I know for my own, depending upon a lot of condition, the actual is different than that depicted by the on board computer.

Thanks for posting this. We will be in the market this summer and I'm back and forth on what brand to buy. Fords have treated us very well over the years but I was eyeing those early mileage comments, too. I know those were during the intro testing and were mostly off road mileage reports. I'm glad to hear a positive report.
The computer on my 2005 has always checked out to be within 1/10 mpg of what I get calculating manually over several tanks. Hopefully yours is as accurate. Whatever we get, I'll calculate both ways until comfortable the computer is at least very close.

I had a computer on my 04 Ford and it was not real accurate but my 05 has a very accurate computer and is as close as what Steve has found on his. Huge improvement and the message centre as they call it gives a system check and gives me the option of reading miles or kilometres. Like most Canadians over 55 I am more comfortable with miles so I just love this feature.

I refueled my 08 6.4 F350 for the first time today. I had traveled 439 miles. I would estimate that 90% of the miles were highway and the other 10% city driving. The calculated MPG was 16.4 Not bad for an engine that is not broken in. The onboard computer is showing 18.2 for highway only driving (I reset it for when I was on the interstate). Looks like the computer is at least close to accurate. I am quite happy so far with the MPG on the new engine. The next test will be to pull my "small" Monty and check the mileage.

OOpps //I deleted that post because it is not there now..It is under the 2007 but this Am it was under the 2008???? True to my dealers word there is a 08 F350 6.4 in my driveway .It is nearly 4 inches higher tha my 05. the 08 has 20 inch wheels. It had 74.6 miles on it when it got here and with mixed driving we see 15.5 MPG.. Better than the 05 V-10 ever got.. The noise level is acceptable, Helen drove it and approves . Compaired to the V-10 it is slow off the line..sort of like my Dad's Buick Dyno flow. We will see what happens with the incentives...The 08 is also single wheel drive. We are debating that change from the dually because the dualy is a pain in the butt to drive around. Sticker is 51,300 well loaded//4X4 etc. We shall see?????

Go for it Rich, I did have that concern with the 20 inch wheel option offered on my F250 and that is why I went with the 18 inch. I really did like the look of the 20 inch wheels though. I not sure what the difference in height is even if there is any, I couldnt seem to get a good answer when I ordered.
