Trailer Brakes

My brand new 06 2955RL towed by a 06 Ford F250 4X4 long bed powerstroke. The Ford has a factory built brake control that works fine. Somewhere in the trailer system is an intermitent brake fault. I suspect it's in the trailer plug cord. We tow along fine for a while then the brake control starts going bong bong bong with a dash board message of "check trailer" and the brake controler flashes red. I tried pluging the trailer cord to the factory installed bumper plug with no improvement. It's a concern not having the brakes working all the time. Plus the noise will drive one right up the wall after a while. Any suggestions?

A all to common issue. Do a search for trailer brakes on this forum..It is 99.999% sure that the problem is in your trailer brakes. Very doubtful that it is in the cord.

My guess is your door side rear wheel has a wire caught and pinched under the actuator. Several folks with new trailers have had the same problem that you are experiencing including myself. I advise you to take it to the dealer and make him pull the wheels as your controller is seeing an intermittent short which will soon become continuous. Mine failed on the first trip out, another MOC member that I have communicated with had the problem the day he brought his Monty home from the dealer. He refused to pull it back to the dealer without brakes and made them come to his home for the service call.

I agree with the others. The new Ford brake controller is an intelligent controller that reports problems to you. We have had several in this forum and only one was in the truck trailer wiring harness. All the others were with the trailer brakes.

Be aware almost all reported the montana dealer blamed the truck and the Ford dealer blamed the trailer. Some reported they got the trailer dealer off dead center by printing the thread showing it was trailer brake problem and showing it to them. Most have been shorts in the hub area as mentioned above. I think one or two were bad connections where the wires are spliced near the axle and wheels. Those splices appeared good until someone pulled on the wires.

Good luck. Let us know what happens.

I have a Brake Smart brake controller and would not have anything else. My controller said i had a short in the brake system. Sure enough it was the right rear magnet,so that dose not surprise me at all.
