Glenn, Cannot answer bout software, etc for Palm Pilot. In my opinion, the small screen on a palm, like that on the Garmin is a handicap at times. Many times this summer we had to get the lap top out and use it to find what we needed on Streets and Maps. Needed the larger format. We have come to the conclusion that we need both, possibly running at the same time. I know that Ron Ames does that too, he showed it at the Show and Tell in Bremen last week.
Al loves his Garmin, I feel it was a waste of coin, and my personal preference would have been to just have the GPS on the computer.
Course, there are a lot of variables, how well you like the software, how well you deal with each software's pecularities, how well the software interacts, or as I say, is it LAME???
Will also depend on your physical layout of your truck, will the computer cover the drink cups, stuff like that.
In our case to use the computer for longer time frames, Al is gonna have to hot wire a invertor directly to the battery, my current lap top is a current hog and the portable invertors just won't run it.
Now, how is that for not answering your question and saying a lot of other stuff?? HAHA
