Montana Owners Forum resident tire expert Lonnie B, who is highly respected for his knowledge on tires and manages a reputable tire shop, had this suggestion for a quality LT tire. 4 years ago, Lonnie helped me out and I went for the BFG Commmercial TA on my Montana. Couldn't be happier! Lonnie had this to say last year. I suspect prices have gone up since................

Below is an updated list of my personal preferences, along with a "ballpark" price, not including installation. Prices vary across the country, and even from dealer to dealer, so shopping around a little would be a good idea. I recommend going to a REPUTABLE dealer, one that sells a lot of tires, one whose main business is tires.

LT235/85R16E

1. Michelin XPS Rib - $314.00 each.
2. Bridgestone Duravis R250 - $250.00 each.
3. Bridgestone Duravis R500 - $206.00 each.
4. Firestone Transforce H/T - $162.00 each.
5. BF Goodrich Commercial T/A - $188.00 each.

Lonnie B would be a good resource, but he will need to know how heavy your 3850FL is...ie, are you within the GVWR of the unit or are you over. And you need to ask yourself what your comfort level is with each of the tires you are considering. I would expect that your unit came with G load rated tires...but I know that I and many others received those wonderful Marathon creations. I was lucky that I received minor damage from my two blowouts on the same trip so it was worth it for me to go beyond a G rating. Good luck with your decision. John

We have had the G614's on our 3750 and now the 3850. No problems whatsoever to date. You made a wise decision.

how do you run your tire pressure? Do you run it up to 110 or by weight?

I use 10 psi over the weight chart recommendation. Currently running at 105 psi cold. Not a recommendation, but it is what we use.

I just bought the mich. rib tires , 235/85/r16 thru Tirebuyer.com , 285.00 per tire 7.45 shipping each. Fed ex had them to me the very next morning at my door

The specs on that rig show 14,000 lbs on the two axles, so assuming the load is equal, you need a minimum 3,500 lb capacity tires. I would really hope they put 8,000 axles on that rig, but that is another twist on this topic. The Keystone site shows the G range tires as an option.

Don't bet on an even weight distribution between wheels. There is quite a difference between ours. Having your rig weighed, where they can weight each wheel separately, is the only why to know for sure.

One must absolutely consider the above. We have not weighed our current rig but our previous 3455 loaded was almost 700 lbs heavier on the drivers side as compared to the curb side wheels.

I'm not in the G or Rib camp, or even sold on needing STs. Firestone Transforce LTs have been on ours for well over 15k miles with no problem save for a nail we picked up at a country fuel station. Tire was plugged and hasn't leaked after a good 4k miles since. IMHO from what I've experienced, LT tires have vastly more reserve capacity than equivalently priced ST ones (don't worry a bit about exceeding 65 or even 70 mph going down hills) and are easily found at almost any place selling tires. When they need replacing, I may not stay with Firestone, but the new ones will be LT types.

That brings up the fact that manufacturers say not to trust any tire over five years old. They 'rot' or degrade from the inside over time and will eventually fail if you don't replace them. My truck had been mostly sitting in a barn when I bought it in early spring 2013, with only 28k miles on it. Although the tires were like new, I still replaced them all before we took off on our nine week and 6,600 mile vacation last fall. This is something a lot of RV owners don't think about and then wonder why they have a failure on old tires when they look so new.
