What?! Again? Michelin tire separation

I posted a Michelin tire problem with pictures some time ago.

Well, guess what? It happened again. Another Michelin LTX M/S2 had tire separation. But I noticed it so fast, the tire did not look as bad as the first time this happened.

Going for another free replacement tomorrow (running on the spare now and have no spare until the tire is replaced.

Can anyone add any bad experience on this tire. Is it just a bad lot, or should I finally leave Michelin for another brand?

I did notice outside wear on the fronts and had the wheel alignment done, but things looked good and the techs didn't see anything broken or terribly out of whack.

I would imagine that a severe alignment could cause a tire to fail, but I would think tire separation is more manufacturer fault than not. Opinions of others? LonnieB, can you add any concerns at your store that you've seen?

Art,
I have the same tires on my truck. I paid over $1000 for 4 tires in May of 2012. I now have 16151 miles on them and they are very close to the wear bars. I doubt they will make it through the winter. Michelin sells them as a 70000 mile tire. I'm not even going to get 1/3 of that out of them. I haven't had any indication of separation. Hopefully, I'll get some warranty credit towards different tires but I know they won't be Michelins.
I am very attentive to tire pressures, alignment and rotation but this still occurred. They wore the same as yours beginning on the outside on the front tires.
I'm thinking of the BFGoodrich-Rugged Trail T/A for my next tires. Any thoughts on these anyone?

I replaced my factory tires (General) with BFG Rugged Terrain T/A LT275/70R18 about 20,000 miles ago. I can't recall the exact price but it sure wasn't $1,000. I have rotated twice. Tires still look new to me.

Hmmmm I have the Michelin LTX on my trailer and now have a little over 8000 miles on them. They seem to be holding up well so far. I have had the BF Goodrich's too on both my truck and trailer and really liked them. Will be keeping a closer eye on the Michelins now....

I have run the LTX MS"2s for several years and never got more than 50k. They ride good and stay round. The mileage any tire mfg. advertise is just a estimate.

I guess one of us is the exception to the rule. I have had Michelin on every vehicle, mine and the DWs, for years. Never had one fail. Can't remember even having a flat on one.
Current truck has OEM Michelin LTX A/T on it. At 25,000 miles they look as though I should get that many more miles on them. Wife's Expedition came OEM with Pirelli that wore out at less than 35,000. Replaced with Michelin. 50,000 miles on those and still good for another 10,000-15,000.
XPS Ribs on the Monte have about 18,000 and still look new.
Typical of my experience.

I have a 2003 Acura RL 3.5 that came with Michelin. Warranty for 50,000, replaced them at 60,000.
My 2008 RAM had Michelin warranty for 50,000 also got 60,000. Just replaced them with Michelin LTX M/S2's.
Michelin is an excellent tire in my opinion.

I have these on my 2012 Ford F250 which just rolled over 60K miles. Rotated with every oil change. Changed this week and Ford says I probably have another 10K miles to go before the wear mark. Sorry for your issues but I will be putting another set back on and hoping for the same.

I'm on the fence with Michelin now. Fortunately, there are plenty of other good brands but I'm guessing this is a bad lot. Put them on at 56,000 miles and I think they had the same date code which was only about a month or two old. The first one failed at 94,000 (38,000 usable miles) and the second one failed at 109,000 miles (53,000 usable miles). They are not wearing excessively and I think I'll get the alleged 70,000 miles if the other originals hold up. I'm just disappointed this is happening when Michelin has been so reliable up to now for me and was trying to get a sense from others. So right now I am left with two originals (with 53,000 & 38,000 miles), the original unused spare and a new tire (with 14,000 miles) and the brand new replacement tire is put up under to use as the spare.

So far it doesn't sound like something I should panic about after all, unless I lose one more. I am pretty nuts about tire maintenance so that's not it. I'm leaning that tire separation is a manufacturing issue. I hope this is more true than not.

When we were ready for new tires earlier this year, I was looking at the MS2 tires instead of the AT2 tires that came on the truck. What I found is, on some of the sizes, the MS2's don't have the weight capacity that the same size AT2's have, so we went with new AT2 tires. The weight code is 124. On the same size MS2, the weight code is only 114, all this on a LT265/70R18/E tire. You can't just depend on the load range E rating.

Art, I am running the same tires as you and I put 6 on my dually at 80,000 miles. Replaced the fronts at 40,000 due to the outside tread wearing badly. On a Ford truck it makes sense because of the Ibeam front suspension. With trailer on it lifts the front and the tires start to camber. My solution was air bags to level load. I replaced outside duals at 55,000 and still had good wear. Just yesterday I replaced the inside duals that had 85,000 miles on them and the wear wasn't that bad at all. I just know I had pushed them way beyond there life expectancy. Happy with the Michlins here.

I just checked my paper work for my tires. Purchased 4 yrs ago and have put 42000 on them. They look great. Maybe it's because I don't pull Monte as much as the rest of you.

Art, I haven't seen any separation problems with the Michelin LTX M/S2, nor have I heard of any problems from Michelin. This is one of my top selling tires and if there were problems I'm sure I would have heard about it. Probably just coincidence that you had two on the same vehicle separate.

Thanks Lonnie. That's my thinking, too.
