2008 F350, 6.4 bogs
Every once in a while on the highway, when I floor it to pass someone, it bogs (hesitates) and puffs white smoke for a while. Then it runs fine. Anyone else have this issue?
Thanks! Merry Christmas & Happy Hanaukah!

I think most Diesels have a little hesitation to them when you "punch" it unless they've been chipped and all diesels give the puff of smoke when you punch them too. Don't really think it's anything to worry about.

I would take it in to a dealer and have them check it out. You should not get white smoke. Use the warranty you paid for it.

Anyone hear that Ford is once again changing engines, as they repeatedly did with the 6.0 from year to year? Heard that the other day at a Ford dealer. Trying to overcome another design problem, not sure what it was, or why. I had thought the Ford had finally come up with a real winner with the 2008 engine and was looking at one.

No black & sooty, I am wondering, because I don't drain my water filter every month, whether that has something to do with it. It has happened twice & as I recall, the water filter warning came on after it bogged down once on a trip.
Love the truck!! Thanks for the replys.

My water filter light has never come on in 17K miles. You may have got some bad diesel. There are EPA requirements that have to be met in 2010 and it is said that Ford has a new diesel in the works to meet those requirements. Believe it is a 6.7l diesel.

Ford is changing again because of the EPA as I understand it. And I'm sure will boost the HP and Torq. Don't know if that will be nessary because its possible there will be no competition. With the problem with GM & Chysler, Ford could possiblity be the Big 1 until Toyota tools up a 1 ton and they aready have one ready according to Truck Trend. GBY...

I just read today that you are supposed to empty it once a month. On that trip a warning popped up to empty it, was 200 miles from anywhere. Ford boys from Louisville factory were at the Kentucky state fair with an exhibit showed me where it was on a truck they had on display. Freaked me out and it wasn't where they said it would be, it was further forward.(on mine)Merry Christmas & Happy Hanukkah!

You are correct Mike on what it says in the book and I did that for the first few months we had the truck and all I got out was diesel. we asked some Ford folks at Home and they said that when the light comes on drain it..no need to do it every month. We have checked it a couple of times in the last few months and it was clear.. Most likely you got some bad diesel. Of course it does not hurt to do it every month.

Ford is going to a new engine due the issues with the current engine supplier. The new engine is built in-house.

Quote... " Ford continues to make good progress testing its upcoming 6.7L V8 diesel engine, designed and built in-house. The new engine, code named Scorpion, will replace the Navistar-sourced 6.4L V8 Power Stroke diesel engine in Ford's heavy-duty pickups by 2011.
The latest power targets are said to be more than 390 horsepower and 720 lb.-ft. torque. Ford's current Power Stroke diesel is rated at 350 hp and 650 lb.-ft.
Scorpion fuel economy is expected to improve by 3 MPG or more compared to the current Power Stroke, aided by the same new six-speed automatic transmission slated for the 2009 Ford F-150.
How important is this motor? The move is expected to permanently end Ford's longtime use of Navistar-built diesel engines in its heavy-duty pickups, due to an ongoing legal battle between the two companies over warranty and cost issues related to the old 6.0L V8 Power Stroke (model years 2003–2007). Ford has used Navistar diesels in its F-Series trucks since 1982.
It's not yet known if the Scorpion will continue to use the Power Stroke name or if Ford will create a brand-new label for the engine. "
Rich Says..Navistar builds a proven diesel motor..Ford can build a better one?? Think I would pass on the first year or two of this motor...

I heard that it will be in about 2 or 3 years before it is out to the end user, and that Mercedaes is going to build it, as for the smog thing I heard that it will rerout the two quart of unburnt fuel fapors collected right through the motor again.

I just do not know what to tell you Ford drivers but when I punch my Dodge I get no hesitation, no puffs of smoke just miles posts clicking by. My Cummins turbo is chipped with a flashpaqe super chip with a full 5 inch air intake and single exhaust, throwing dust and gravel is just my style. Good luck with SOB's fellas. Jon

Turbo lag has been commom in Diesel motors. The 08 Ford Twin Turbo is designed to greatly reduce turbo lag.
Quote "The time required to bring the turbo up to a speed where it can function effectively is called turbo lag. This is noticed as a hesitation in throttle response when coming off idle. This is symptomatic of the time taken for the exhaust system driving the turbine to come to high pressure and for the turbine rotor to overcome its rotational inertia and reach the speed necessary to supply boost pressure"

I would suggest checking with a dealer or an online forum (fordtrucks.com??) to see if there's a TSB out on this problem. When my 6.0L Ford had a similar problem there was a TSB and a quick dealer fix for it. Might be worth checking.
