Replacing trailer electrical box

I plan to replace my electrical box on my trailer. Do I have to disconnect my batteries? Or is it enough to turn of the battery switch on the trailer. Can I keep my 110 volt plugged in?

Tommy,

What electrical box are you planning to replace? Your converter or power panel?

In general it is best to have all power off to do electrical work but it is not clear what you are doing.

Tommy,

Since it is only 12 v you could get away with leaving power on but I would still recommend disconnecting. The box change should be a quick swap out.

No, it shuts off to only some circuits. Even with the disconnect switch off, you still have power to hydraulics, CO detector among other things. You could check with your meter to make sure the circuit is dead, but it would be safest to disconnect the battery. Good luck.

In your battery compartment you can disconnect the blue wire from your terminals to disconnect your battery from the emergency brake system.

Just be safe and unplug from shore power, and disconnect the ground at the battery. Why take ANY chances? But, if you short something, the most that will happen is you'll blow a fuse.

Thanks guys, what gauge is the electrical wires. Is it 12 or 14 . I need to buy the terminals to put on the wires in order to connect into my new box. The wires are now connected with wire nuts.

I'm pretty sure the 12vdc feed line from the truck should be 10 gauge. I would use 10 gauge for the White ground wire also since it's carrying all the return current.

There are different size wires in that box. And some connections have 2 wires and some 3. You can open the cover and see. But I would just buy a bag of multiple size wire nuts to cover all needs. I replace my 7 pin power cord a few months ago, but do not remember exactly what nuts I used.
