At What Temperature?

The forecast for the next 2 nights here is for temperatures of 28 or 29F. Am I okay with leaving water in my lines or should I winterized?

Cal,

Do you have the furnace running or is it in storage without power? If you have the furnace going you are good to 0 deg or so.

I do not have the furnace going but can certainly turn it on. It’s only supposed to drop to freezing temperatures overnight.

As Zack said I would run your furnace overnight to be on safe side. Just set furnace 40 to 50 Degrees and you should be ok

If daytime temps are in 50’s or higher I would not worry about 28-29 for 2-3 hours. It takes a while for a closed compartment to cold soak enough to reach the outside temps if it even does. And even longer to drop that water temp down that low. Running the furnace the evening before , even if only for an hour or two, would slow that cold soak even further.

Blew out the water lines yesterday afternoon. Woke up to 4” of snow this morning. We’re forecast to have 3 nights in a row of freezing temperatures. Glad I blew the lines out.

I myself don’t worry about winterizing until it is going to be below freezing for extended periods of time or an extremely low temperature for shorter period of time. Turning on your heater is cheap insurance and if you that route you might as well open up the cabinets so they receive the warm air where your pipes are.
Happy and safe roads to you.

We’re not home this weekend so didn’t want to leave furnace on. With below freezing temperatures for 9 or 10 hours at a stretch I didn’t want to take a chance. This will give me some peace of mind.

Every time I’m out west I forget what the difference is in the seasons are from there to our home in Virginia.
We are eating out of the garden, Lettuce and squash will be ready by the end of the month with tomatoes not far behind.

Good move. Doesn’t take that long and no chemicals to deal with. Cheaper too, not burning propane. Nice to have peace of mind while you are away.
