You know its not a dumb question, Just like DAM WORKER has i also have an Aisin transmission on my ram and it has a PTO, and now that's got me thinking. HMMM. Keep up the good work because great ideas can come from what seems like a dumb question.

This is what I do. Works great.

not a dumb question at all,
you get a lot of different answers which leads to different way to think about things. Carl I really like the way to run your AC while driving down the road. that would justify my generator expense a little more.

For the past 23 years I have had an Onan 5.5 mounted in two different Dodge Cummins. Also mounted a 55 gal marine aluminum tank for diesel and a 25 gal for gasoline. Power is supplied to a 20 amp and 50 outlet mounted in the pickup ed. I run a 50 amp power cable from the Montana outlet under the 5th wheel to the front with some extra length of cable to work with when the trailer is unhitched. This system has worked great for me. I could not tolerate summer heat without the AC and I don't stay in RV parks very often, almost never. Nice having AC power to use microwave, TV, water heater, AC, etc. Wouldn't leave home without it. An alternative would be two Honda 2200 generators connected to the 25 gal tank, or any other permanent or non-permanent fuel tank. I use a Honda 2200 on my boat. It easily powers the AC and microwave, plus accessories. The new 2200 gets you over the hump that the 2000 had difficulty with or would not quite start that AC.

Not impossible, practical...?

I agree with most on here, no such thing as a dumb question except the 1 that goes unasked.

That said, yes there are a couple routes to take to accomplish this. Cost is the issue. But it is possible, even with an inverter, just really, really expensive.

My brother has a 2018 SOB and placed one of those racks in the receiver hitch on the back of his 5th wheel. Then he cable locks a 8500 watt generator to it and with the 50 amp RV connector in the back it's just a short cable to connect it. The generator's stock gas tank will allow the unit to run 8 - 10 hours. He carries extra gas cans in the truck bed. He runs it all night when he is boondocking and of course in a camp ground he doesn't need it. One advantage to his set up is the generator is available for other duties when he isn't camping, like being a back up for his house.

Yes you can. Maybe?

I have almost done what you want with my Ram. It has a 440 amp alternator and I use it and my truck to recharge my battery bank. I have 9 100 amp lithium batteries. It takes about 2-3 hours if completely dead. I also have a 12 v air conditioner that we run off the batteries and it will keep the bedroom very cool and will run all night long if needed and by running the fantastic fan in the kitchen it helps the rest of the coach , if it’s not to hot.

Here’s my setup:
440 amp battery
High idle on the truck

$139. Battery charger/manager

I used the same basic setup on out 41’ sail boat. A great place to research would be in boating forums. They have been using solos and generators for a long time.

I know it’s not exactly what you were looking for. But maybe it’s a step in the right direction.

Remember just about any thing can be done with time and resources.

I have a couple of friends that went after is differently. One put a 50 gal tank in his bed (diesel) and a 5.5 generator to run off it. The other bought 2 3200 gas/propane generators $1000.00 each and carries them in the bed, he buys allot of propane, but can refill the gas from his 52 gal tank as needed. None of us thought of hooking them up going down the road. See what you thought was a stupid question thought allot of us something, thanks.

On another note, can you replace the stock propane tanks in a Montana with 40lb tanks?

Last weekend I stopped in route to our campground on top of Blewett Pass and turned on our built in 5500 Onan unit and started both AC's as the temps were in the upper 90's and low 100's depending on elevation. 30/45 minutes later we pulled into our site 30 amp only and the unit was still warm in the main part but very cool in the bedroom. I know there are some units that can start and stop your generaters remotely along with starting them automatically if the temperature goes above a preset setting. I can't remember who but at least one forum member has that system.

Years ago some company had a belt driven generator to be mounted in the engine area. Today, no room..

I have the model 3402 RL and i replaced mine with the 40 pound tanks with no problem. The 30 and 40 are the same diameter but the 40 is a few inches taller. You may need to relocate your regulator a little higher using self tapping screws but that should be it. Your hose line should have plenty of slack to move regulator. Your bracket to secure the tanks will not have to be adjusted.About a 5 minute job on each side. 33% more fuel does make a difference.

This is a great thread. The ideas are flying like geese in the fall. Should have a rally just on tow vehicles. I could look at that all day long. Lol

Several current generation trucks do offer AC outlets in the cab. Not enough to power an air conditioner but sufficient to charge your lap top.

Granddaughters saw that outlet and wanted to use it for their hair irons. I had to disappoint them-- not enough power.

Dcole ... I've just gotta ask … to what tune do (9) 100 amp lithium batteries dent your wallet, how big a space do they fit in, and how many years are they good for?
