Traveling With Dogs

Normally our two large dogs travel in the back seat of our crew cab Ford 250. During an upcoming trip our daughter and her husband will be traveling with us - driving from Georgia to Michigan. There will be no room for the dogs in our truck. Do any of you have experience traveling with dogs in your Montana? Our trip will be during the summer so heat is a concern. Would it hurt anything to travel with one or more fifth wheel windows opened for ventilation? I assume the air conditioner is strictly 110V so running that is not an option.
