15,000 miles on New F450. Update

My 2014 F450 just completed fifteen thousand miles. All but about 3,000 towing Montana. The truck has been flawless. New Sync system rivals my 4 Chrysler products U Connect. That surprised me, because my two new Jeeps have updated U-Connect systems that's been vastly improved. I am getting 12.5-13.5 in town. 12.2 towing. It was in 11 range for awhile. Def Fluid towing is about 1 $10.00 box per 3800 miles tow mode. Truck email updates are great, even set up service appointments. The truck has required two services since new. Both cost me $95.00. No warranty issues with exception that "front factory mud flaps" keep coming off? Ford web site, I belong to reports similar issue. Ford replaces at no cost. Power is great and exhaust braking is very smooth and stable. The truck gets praise everywhere I take it. It's a formidable pickup truck, but as I reported requires DOT and CA permits where I live. So far not towing (towingvRV exempt) I have been waved pass all truck scales. The Turing radius is half of my old F450 truck, due to the "Fat Boy Front Axle"! I know we have a lot of Ram and GMC owners in MOC. I think all the new HD trucks are excellent RV rigs. The 2015 trucks from all 3 manufacturers, seem to be coming right after first of year. 2014 looks like a short production year for all makes. I am very pleased thus far with my purchase! Adding remote power tailgate next month. Will report more with photos!

We have the 350, with the same drivetrain and found the 6.7/new transmission to be great and trouble free.

Sounds good, hope thing continue to go well. We now have about 47K on our F350 and have enjoyed every mile. It appears we will put 20K+ yearly on our truck doing sight seeing along with our moving to moderate weather locations. Another plus we observe is the elevated view when riding in the truck verses being in our mid size car.

15,000?! It ain't even broken in, yet. My '06 started breaking in at about 40,000 miles. The average mpgs went up just a bit and now my truck has JUST turned over 100,000 miles.

Remote power tailgate? Oh my. And I thought I was fancy when I added the remote power lock to my tailgate, but I still have to open and shut it by hand. What next? Automatic steps dropping from the tailgate edge to the ground? I used aftermarket steps for that (see signature). The competitive truck market sure helps as each of them tries to oneup each other and this doesn't even consider the clever aftermarket stuff that hits the world. Awesome.

I heard the new GM's have an escalator, but I can't confirm that.

I am glad you are satisfied with you F450. My 2011 F450 just turned 45K and has been troubled free and I am looking at many more miles pulling the rig. Here in NC my truck is classified Commercial Private and does not require special permits. Each state has it laws pertaining to F450 as commercial trucks. Sooner or later the states should realize these are personal vehicles and not Fleet Trucks.

Same with my 07 Duramax dually, at around 30k the MPG went up a bit.

These newer trucks are beasts (Good luck, Toyota, on catching up). My 2013 3500 is a beast. I have 6,000 miles on it and the dealer informed me that the best milage will come at the 30K-50K range. 12.2 towing from Mich to Florida and 22-23 going down the Interstate empty at this stage. If you owned a older diesel and have upgraded to one of the new models, you will more than amazed at the absolute raw power AND mileage in these things. Enjoy that new 450. I can imagine how impressive it is...

Do you mean remote tail gate lock or does Ford have a thingy that opens and closes the tailgate?

I did some web searches after reading about this. Not only are there devices to assist with easier opening and closing of the heavy tailgate, there are also some aftermarket devices that open AND/OR close the tailgate (hands-free). I would NOT want to get these from Ford cuz of their potential markup.

But in a matter of time, the brainiacs in the Big 3 engineering departments will finally wise up and add an expensive option to new trucks and embed the price of it in the Sale price (we are so willing to pay more for the gadgetry when it's done this way). Like the new options from Ford of the integrated steps and handle or the integrated fiver hitch or the spray bed liner options. Then they would have to make sure it satisfies us truck owners who sometimes remove our tailgates. For example, I added the remote tail gate lock (unlocks the tail gate from the key fob) and truck bed lights (turn on automatically when the tailgate is dropped) and when I remove the tailgate I have to remember to disconnect these so they don't interfere with tailgate removal. An automatic tailgate opener will probably be trickier.

If Honda or Toyota come out with a full sized one ton diesel P/U, I'd like to see it. My bet would be that they would be every bit as good as what we have now.

Then when the Japanese also start making RVs, the quality should get better too, ya think? Honda Montana... nice ring to it, huh? But it sounds like an old TV show.

It's called DropTail. It's a complete remote control to lower gate and also designed to lower slightly, at higher speeds to reduce drag! Saw it at SEMA last year. Looks like easy install will post when done!

Jim the problem you will have is finding system compatible with your Trucks rolling code remote! I tried to find one compatible with factory's keys and ran into brick wall! I never take off tailgate so the DropTail works for me. Yet that gives me one more remote to deal with, which I was trying to avoid . I am trying to see if my installer can tie my to my built in upfitter switches. Not sure that is possible yet!

Hi, found out that Mopar makes a tailgate lock that is kinda like a door lock solenoid and it is hard wired to the door lock ckts.

Using the factory key fob, when you unlock the truck you also unlock the tailgate. Maybe Ford has this also?

I really like the tow mirrors that go in and out and fold against the window at the touch of a button.
