Electrical Problem

Electrical question??
I’m having to replace the end of my shore 50amp cord and the Fifth wheel electrical receptacle after they shorted out. I’m replacing them with a SmartPlug. I followed the instructions and replace the cord plug which called to insert and connect the color wire into the corresponding color hole. Green, white, black and red. Removing the female receptacle from the Fifth wheel I found the ground was in the green, white was in the white, but the black wire was in the red port and the black was in the red colored port.
Does it matter which of the HOT wires are in the red or black?
My instructions for SmartPlug calls to match the colors Red to Red and Black to Black.
Any electricians in our group?

No it doesn’t in your scenario. The important points are to get the green and white wires ( ground and neutral) into their corresponding locations. The two hot or phases can be interchanged without issue.

What PNW Fireguy said.

The old plug probably did not short. It probably overheated and burned the contacts and connector due to bad wire connections. Unfortunately a not uncommon problem.
