Drivers side fender...

Hi guys, I have 2 questions. On my 2018 3920, coming home I noticed the drivers side fender flapping in the wind, I guess the plastic broke around the screw. I pulled over and took off the fender, as to not cause additional damage.

1. Would this be covered under the extended warranty..?

2 I checked trekwood and they didn’t have the part anywhere else to look..?

Thanks,

Tony

Fender skirt

My guess is that the reason trekwood does not carry them is because the skirts on both sides of the 3920-21-31 are split by a slideout...so one skirt is 2 pieces. Not sure how many other models have the split skirt. My unit is 18 months old and I did not buy extended warranty - so it would not be covered on my unit.

Years ago I had a blowout on my Alpenlite and it damaged the skirt. I did a fiberglass patch on the back side (mainly) patched over a metal bar for reinforcement and used bonds on the front. Spray painted white to match. From 50 yards or at 60 mph it looked like a pro did it.

If the damage around the screw was the only damage, I would reinforce as necessary, and reinstall using larger screws or as I did on ours, nuts and bolts with washers in front. I would check the bracing strips as well if present on your rig. Good chance it will happen on the other side at some point. Most RV part venders sell generic skirts, and you can cut into two pieces if necessary.

Tony, If the fender and the trim were not damaged and the holes aren't enlarged to much, you can put the screws back in and use spring nuts on them to hold the screws from coming loose again. I call then spring nuts because you screw the screw into them and they are somewhat like a lock nut or lock washer and gives pressure on the screw to keep it tight. There are other posts here on the Forum concerning the same thing and I'm pretty sure one of them has a picture of the spring nut I'm trying to describe. I've put them on all of my fender mounting screws and have not had any problems since. This is a known problem because when the unit goes down the assembly line the tech doing that particular job has a tendency to over torques them and they come loose easily. If you can't find the fenders yourself, you may have to go through a dealer to get them. They are not cheap but at least you will get a perfect match then. Also if there are any RV Salvage yards in your area you might be able to pick one up there also.

Since your unit is a 2018 you are most likely going to have to have a dealer order it. If it is still under warranty, worth a try to get Keystone to fix on their dime. Good luck.

I replaced mine after a tire separation beat one of them up pretty bad. Think it was made by ICON which I found on Amazon. They weren't exact match of OEM but close enough as they are on opposite sides of the rig. Try these links:

You can apply "structure" behind that total pullout and then drill a new screw hole. One method would be too use fiberglass window screen patches built up in several layers. You can use abs cement for plumbing sold many places. Rough up the backside of the plastic first.

Put a big washer in and you will have it fixed in 10 minutes. I would not replace the fender.

Trekwood does carry the fender it comes as one peace and you just cut it! But before I did that I would try fixing the old one. I did it on ours.

Most likely the fender is flapping because one of the fender support bracket screw heads sheered off.

You can repair this by making a small right angle bracket and mount one side to frame edge and other to support bracket. Or.. you can pull all the skirting off to get to sheared off screw. I chose the least intrusive way....

You can also repair any cracks around the fender well screw holes by using JB Plastic Weld epoxy and clean and apply to backside of fender. I added a small piece of metal to one area that had a 2 inch crack. The metal acts as a doubler and supports the repair

None have ever cracked any further after repairs made and support bracket reattached with my right angle repair

With the Ops broken out area I’d simply fashion a light piece of metal and drill hole thru it. Then use JB plastic bond and attach from backside. Use matching spray paint to blend the metal patch repair. You will never see repair from front side. Way less expensive then full fender replacement

A couple years ago, we had a couple small trash cans placed under our curb side slide, and a bear got under there to get at the cans and popped out the part of the fender where the screw goes through. I went to Lowes and picked up an Oatey epoxy stick and along with the piece broke out, used the epoxy to glue it back in and added more for strength. Once hardened, I just drilled out the hole for the screw and it is still holding. https://www.lowes.com/pd/Oatey-Fix-I...-Putty/3132883

the color match would be a problem, as the paint is not available here in California. I guess they could match in compliant paint but not sure how close they could get. I should have picked up some paint when I took my summer trip !

My local CW submitted the warranty request to Keystone. I called them trying to order the part myself and she told me "you're really not that far out of warranty go ahead and have your local repair shop place the order and im sure we will approve it." so we will see if they actually do !

Shelf bracket from home depot. Cut one leg short, fasten wth tex screws. Bracket is really stiff and prevents the fender from moving in and out going down the road

I've has a problem with the fender screws coming loose on no less than 5 new Montanas over the years. Yet when I ask folks with other brands made by non-Thor manufacturers they say they've never had a problem. What's up with that? I don't believe it's for me to repair so I take all of these problems in for warranty repair so that Keystone RV understands that we have to live with or repair substandard manufacturing methods and quality.

**Update**

I got a call from my CW, they actually do good work there, Keystone is picking up the fender on their dime even though I’m actually about 7 weeks out of warranty. Thank you keystone for standing behind this part, hopefully no other parts will fail anytime soon.

Yeah, I have the same problem. My model FB3921 has two fender skirt pieces. A very small piece towards the front of the slides. Air catches in the open pocket of the main skirt fender and bends it outward while traveling. It eventually leaves the screws in place and breaks out around the screw. Then a nice long crack forms at the top of the skirt and it too starts to bend out. Seems I have a bit of work to do!
