TV oil change

How do you full timers get your truck oil changed? I'd like to do it myself, but i don't think any campgrounds will allow that.
Thanks in advance for your replies.

gone

It takes me less than 5 mins to change my oil and filter. Don`t even need to jack up the truck. No mess with the right products from Auto Zone. 20 qt. enclosed oil drain pan, filter wrench, extra large sandwich bag for filter large, done. Drop off the used fluids at any auto/oil change store the next time your out and about. I think they`re more worried about the guy that wants to do 4 wheel brake job with beer and friends making noise,

Been changing mine on site for years. Never been an issue. Just do not spill. I put a ground cover down just in case.

I've used those Quick Change places several times while on the road, BUT I supplied my high quality oil and filter and just paid them their normal $20 or so for their time. Just have to watch and make sure they use my oil and filter and not their cheap stuff.

Yeah most private sites don't allow vehicle maintenance. I hate those quick lube places. Time and time again I hear of people who are not mechanically inclined, being taken advantage of and those places pushing unnecessary repairs or maintenance. Glad I can do my own at home. If it were me, I'd Google local shops, and use a mechanic who gets great reviews. They are out there. Good luck on your quest.

I'm not a full timer, but would rather roll in crushed glass before I took my truck someplace to get the oil changed. It's just not that hard. Anyways ... when out on the road and an oil change interval comes up and it can't happen at the campground ... I just drive out in the country a few miles and find an adequate place just off the road. Like said above ... 10 - 15 minutes then off to Oreilly's or AutoZone to donate my used oil.

Yup, I agree with you, that's why I asked. I don't trust those oil change places to change to oil in a lawnmower much less my truck!

Years ago, I got in a hurry and took the wife's Expedition into Jiffy Lube for a oil change before travel. Turns out, they drained about a lb. of freon from the AC hoping I would return and have them fix it. Found the cap off the line still laying on the frame under the hood. Up until then (and ever since) I had been the only person under that hood, so I know it wasn't like that when I got there.
Had to add a whole pound of freon and some dye to ensure no leaks. Once it was recharged, I never had a problem with the AC again for a few years until we traded it in.
I'll never go back to one of those places again!

Shortly after completing chemo and radiation and being extremely weak and barely able to walk, let alone drive, my wife and I had to take her car in for an oil change. I too have always done my own maintenance and was reluctant to have someone else touch the car. I took it to a Pep Boys because they had the recommended oil and thinking that since they did a variety of other work I might not get a ham fisted ape working on it. WRONG!
Noticing that my car had been on the lift for quite a while and there were now 3 guys under it looking at the oil pan and going back and forth to the tool box I became very concerned and went to the service manager to find out what was going on. He told me that they messed up the drain plug getting it out but not to worry they were getting a new plug off the shelf to replace it. Fast forward to my next oil change where when I put the car on my lift and go to remove the plug I’m met with view of the same mangled plug that they said they replaced! So, not only did they destroy my plug, they lied about replacing it. Not only did I have to buy a new plug and delay my oil change until I could do so, it took at least 30 minutes to get the old plug out. Never again!

Brought my own oil and filters. Found local reputable shop and paid their price. Usually do it myself but during a 7,500 mile trip not possible.

I no longer enjoy changing oil and leave it to others. That turns out to be Ford dealers and not the knuckle draggers at the quick lube places particularly when I am out of town (when most of my changes occur). The last time the service guy came and got me no more than 10 minutes after I left the truck with him. Turns out the last place (my local dealer where I bought the truck) to chnage the oils stripped the threads on it and consequently the pan.

I emailed the service manager at the local dealer detailing what was found and my displeasure with the tech who obviously ignored the problem. The good news is my service manager paid for the replacement pan, plug and the oil change. Try that at your local quick lube shop.

Wait a minute - are you saying the oil is supposed to be changed? I was told to expect 300,000 miles on my Duramax. I wasn’t planing on changing oil until the half way mark. Wow! The things you learn from reading this forum!

I’m with Mike. I thought oil was just to keep them from rusting.

No - I keep mine protected with pine sap, bugs and bird poop.

I have never changed the oil in my current rig as lifetime oil changes were included when I bought it 12 years ago.

The only thing I hate worse than sitting on a cactus with no pants on is doing my own auto mechanics. I'm a great wood worker, carpenter, mason, electrician. But when it comes to combustion engines of any type, automobiles, or lawn mowers.... I absolutely choose the cactus any day!

With that said, the ONLY place I allow anyone to touch my vehicles are certified GM dealerships. Yes, I probably pay too much for a simple oil and filter change, but the alternative (for me) is to get naked and find a desert cactus somewhere!

You guys on the MOC that covet getting your oil changed at the dealership realize that the dealer is not going to pay their high dollar line mechanics to change oil. You're probably getting the next guy up from the guy that washes cars in the afternoons. At least that's how it plays out in the Wichita area. Small town dealerships mileage may vary here however.

Nope - at small town dealers the guy that washes your pride and joy ALSO does the oil changes..... I don't even want their courtesy wash job with their mud caked brush....
