Thermostat

Is the thermostat unique or can I use one from my house that controls both heat and cool?

It depends on which unit you have. In my case, the Dometic systems are designed with a control board that requires the CT thermostats. So any old thermostat won't work.
Micro-aire had come out with one that replaces the CT thermostats from Dometic and, so far, results have been good, but they are very expensive. Two thermostats cost as much as replacing one of the AC units.
If you have the newer Dometic units, you can check out these to see if it will work for you.

On my 2007 Laredo I put an off the shelf wi-fi thermostat in. It worked perfectly. It had one of those slider bar temp controls with mechanical switches. But I've not yet undertook exploring my 2021 High Country which obviously has a digital controller.

I replaced both my Dometic thermostats with the Micro-Air ones. Now my A/C units work perfectly, in auto, and low/hi. You can control them with your phone too. Very simple installation with just three wires you transfer from the Dometic ones to the new Micro-Airs. Each Micro-Air is $250.00.

Short answer: No. You have to use a thermostat designed specifically for the brand A/C you have on the roof
