Handicap Hand Rails
We full-time in a 2009 3400RL. My wife had a stroke 6 weeks ago and hopefully will be coming home from rehab in a couple of more weeks. Has anyone had any experience in installing a hand rail on the steps leading up to the bedroom? Also I think we might need a hand rail in the bathroom to assist her in standing up and sitting down. Can either of these things be done securely enough to help her? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Use the search function for hand rail and be sure to click on the box for the archives. I did and tuned up 16 pages of results, you will have to look through them to see what suits you, but it has been done.
Once you get your hand rails installed, it is always of benefit to the forum if you would share you installation via pictures posted on the MOC!!

1st of all... best wishes for a speedy recovery to your wife.
I've thought of installing a handrail going up the stairs on the right side in our rig. I like the looks and feel of the wooden one by our door and I bet that it can be had by ordering it. Maybe it's not long enough for your needs but just an idea.

One of our club members installed a hand rail in his Montana leading up to the bedroom. His main concern was finding the metal frame behind the wall. Once found
he installed the rail and it appears to have been done by the factory. Again remember the metal frame behind the wall is the key. If you miss that frame the rail
will come down when someone is holding on to it...After seeing the hand rail in his 5th wheel my wife now wants me to install one in ours....I must admit the way
he did it really looks great and it is extremely sturdy. He used a regular wooden hand rail that can be bought at Home Depot or Lowes then cut it to size.

We have a 2009, 3400RL. During the Fall Rally, we went to a RV salvage store in Elkhart and purchased a wooden handrail ($4.00) that matched our decor perfectly. I installed it at the stairs to the bedroom, right side, as you go up the stairs. There are wooden wall studs that you must locate and I just anchored into the studs. I removed the electrical panel, which helped me locate the wall studs. Be careful. The handrail had four screw holes for anchoring and I hit wood framing with two of the screws. The handrail is very sturdy. The wall studs would also provide support for a handrail, mounted in the bathroom, which I am thinking of adding.

We have one just like the one at the exit door. I got it from Keystone. It is mounted on the left as you go up the stairs. Keystone told me NOT to mount it on the right in the 3400. I use it going up and coming down. On the days when my leg is really not working I grab onto the door handle in the bathroom. That room is so small you could brace yourself against the walls!

Reviving an old post.... Does anyone have the part number for the wooden grab handle that is attach on the side of the exit door? I'd like to use it as a grab rail to go up and down the stairs to/from our bedroom. Thanks!

The hand rail CORattler shows is a 12" unit. I got from Keystone a double length like that and installed it in a 3465SA but I did build a wood rail about 2" x 4" 3' long or so and mounted it to the wall in a 3000RK in 2006 as I have bad knees. The biggest thing is to find something solid to hold it . That is why I used 2 1'X4" so the 1st piece I could bolt to the wall with spacers behind it for your hand , then I could glue and screw the next 1x4 to it and sand it and stain and varnish. It is best to build it 1st and sand it round on top and ends so it looks more like a big hand rail you see in churches. and cut the ends to the 90 Deg to look nice and you will have it , its not a 10 min job as some think. You mite have to install a extra 2x4 in the wall glued to the present studs to hold it .

I like Sailers idea. We just needed something to grab onto that looked OEM but filled the need.
We may need more in the future and will save Sailers idea for use at that time.
