Full Timers are poor trash?

We just began full timing a few weeks ago. I mentioned at work that I was now living in my RV. A co-worker asked "Why, what happened? I explained that it's something the wife and I have wanted to do for a long time. He looked at me like, Yeah, sure. The kicker though was the other night my daughter and family came to visit. At dinner my granddaughter made the comment "I want to live with Nana and Papa, this is cool". My daughter responded with "My daughter is never going to live in a trailer". I asked what she meant by that. She said " You know Dad, if you live in a trailer people think you're poor trash.

Do you get much of this ignorant conception

We haven't gotten any I know of.
Hope you told her it depends on the trailer and the location. Maybe she should see a few web sites of highend RV lots/parks and some prices. Maybe even some median ones.

Ignorance requires education to cure it. If you live by what others think, you get what you get. I really don't care what others think. Some people do live in a "trailer" because of difficult circumstances. RVers who go full time do so because that is what they want. We enjoyed five years full timing and, health permitting, we would continue.

The is nothing worse than prejudice, i.e., prejudging in the presence of arrogant ignorance. The four bedroom, two bath home, in a nice neighbor near NASA in Houston, we sold, was less money than the truck and Montana Big Sky we bought. Yes, there are some trashy folks living in trailers, but I would venture to say there are more living in stick houses. We met some very nice, intelligent, and interesting people in those five years.

We were Trailer Trash long before we ever started camping, but it's funny our Montana cost a lot more than that original trailer, and the SOB even more than our house. So if someone wants to call us "Trailer Trash" go ahead, but there's a member on here that might take offense since I thing it's their Screen Name. LOL

I seem to remember a saying that goes something like "One man's trash is another mans treasure." I always say call me what you want...just don't call me late for dinner!

My suggestion is to start a blog and show lots of pictures of your adventures. Those who are critical, will be jealous when they see what this lifestyle is all about. If not a blog, you can do it on facebook. I have had nothing but positive comments on my blog. People are actually jealous, when they see the beautiful pictures of the national parks and other scenic areas we have visited. Enjoy life to the fullest and don't worry about others opinions.

My wife and I were trailer trash for 7 years. We lived in a 52 foot trailer that was a trailer. After we paid off the $5400 loan we could live for $40 a month and this allowed us to save half the price of our $20,000 dream home we live in today. So go ahead call us trailer trash while you pay your $2000 house payment and I'm kicked back enjoying the good life. Trailer Trash, heck yes!

Sounds a whole lot like jealousy to me. She's looking at a life of raising kids and going to work everyday and your having fun. I'd let it go and keep having fun.

Seems to me as the economy and jobs have headed down, there are more and more people living in RV parks as 'permanent' homes. We are in a park now that has five rows or streets. Three are full of permanent folks and two are for folks staying over night to a few weeks. Many of the permanent are trailer trash...coolers, old refrigerators, old grills, toys, tarps, old RV parts, clothes and trash and other junk laying around. The CG owner tries to keep up with it, but it's hard. This is not a cheap CG, with a walk in price of low $40s.

On edit: The above permanent are not considered "full time RVers." They are people living in an RV park in an RV, most of which cannot be moved due to bad tires or similar issues which makes them un road worthy.

It's all relative, but to the ignorant and uneducated of the RV lifestyle, they can't figure it out. I'm sure they don't realize that a capable diesel truck and a large enough Montana to live in costs more than the median house price in a lot of metropolitan areas. Factor in $75 per night for a RV site in a RV Resort and all the costs associated with keeping the rig on the road and you have a lifestyle that will cost more than traditional housing in many areas of the country.
Have fun and make memories that will last your lifetime.

My husband responds to these remarks as " '60 Hippies with better equipment"!

My thoughts are that the more they see you enjoy it, the more they will learn of a different way of life and priorities!

Enjoy your new life! We are!

Since our last name is "Taylor", we are "Taylor Trash".

In all seriousness, we think you should show your daughter that her thinking may be flawed, in that her prejudices are mis-founded.

Just our opinion from a couple who has been fulltiming in a 2009 Big Sky (one with residential features and the new Level Up) for 5 years.

LOL LOL.....I grew up trailer trash...I was an Army Brat so we lived in trailers till I left to join the army, in fact we had our 12 wide mobile home moved from N.C. to Texas.... Today I am still proud to be trailer trash as we belong to the Texas Boomers camping group. If you ever go to a park in Texas and see RV's with pink flamingos all around them come over and say Hi to some of the friendlest trailer trash around.....

Seems to me that people (especially those in their mid 20's to mid 50's age group) seem to be much more image and status conscious than even just a few years ago. Large houses in exclusive neighborhoods, expensive "status" vehicles, designer clothes and accessories, etc. are essential to their feeling of well being. And of course, many of those are living well beyond their means. But heaven forbid someone may think they come from a less than affluent background.
I have no desire to live like that. Although we are not full timers, I would have no problem at all doing just that.
