Min. Truck to pull a 3295rk
Greetings all:
My family is hoping to purchase a 3295RK. Currently we own a F150. I know I need a new truck, I have looked over the other posts about trucks and I am even more confused as to what specs. on a truck I should be looking for! I need at least a supercab. What GVWR,max payload, towing cap. etc should I be looking for?? We have 2 adults and 2 kids (10/12) and if my wife gets her way we may almost live in it. What would you suggest as the min truck to buy and what would be a "this will work well" choice in the used truck market.
Thanks

Pulling my 3295RK with GMC Sierra 2500 Duramax. No problems to date with power or load.

You might find a new F150 that with the right options is equipped to handle your camper but I wouldn’t recommend it. Your camper is lighter than the new ones. A 3/4 ton truck will work for you. If you wonted to get a 1 ton DRW or SRW there would be nothing wrong with that. Then if you got a larger camper some time in the future you would still be equipped to handle it. The 3/4 and 1 ton SRW truck is the same except for the rear wheel springs.
Go shopping, try them all out and pick the one that fits your needs and what you like the best.
Good luck, enjoy

The key is what weight you'll be putting on the rear tires and that can only be discovered by fully loading the truck and trailer and having each wheel weighed separately. Even if the truck can take the weight SRW's might not be enough and bulges in the sidewall and cracked beads can come up. You can guess how I know.

I have owned both a DRW and a SRW I can't tell the difference in pulling with either one. However with a SRW you have to watch that you don't over load your rear tires.

You didn't say which year you were looking at but it probably doesn't make too much difference. Here are some specs that I see for a 2008 3295RK
Dry Weight 11,110 lbs.
Payload Capacity 3,365 lbs.
Hitch Weight 2,325 lbs.
GVWR 14,475 lbs.
If these are accurate to the rig you're looking at I personally wouldn't get anything less than a 1-ton. You are wise to consider a TV based on GVWR

Adding on to jsb5717... if you load out to the trailer GVWR then it is safe to presume adding roughly 20% of the 3365 trailer payload number to the hitch weight. the published hitch weight is related to the unloaded vehicle weight and does not include cargo or dealer installed options.
Therefore you can expect the fully loaded trailer hitch weight to be in the neighborhood of 3000 lbs. (2365+673 lbs) depending on how you load the trailer. Factor that amount into your truck loading calculations as a starting point.
You are looking at 1 ton truck SRW at a minimum. JMHO

I would say a 350/3500 SRW. But a good friend towed his 2008 3295RK with his 2007 Chevy 2500 all over including Colorado mountain passes with no problem. Not endorsing it. Just saying.

Dont forget -to start with, your truck weight includes 2 adults, 2 kids, (maybe) 35 gal. of fuel (about 200 lb.), hitch - 100-150 lb, anything else in the truck bed. With a pin weight for me of around 24-2500 plus things listed above (minus the kids) I am at 10400 lb and right at my axle limit on the rear. For sure go for the 3500 (since to my dismay it only costs $1500 more and I didn't even look for it) rather than a 2500.

It got me this week on one also. It seems there are a few on here that start making comments on an old topic and everyone else just follows suit. It pays to look at the date.

Guilty as charged, but then, at least we were being constructive. Next time I'll just sit back like Last2Die. LOL

Well it was good advice!
The kids are grown up and might have kids of their own.
In 16 years we all know the basement walls are bulging, probably added a bike rack and put a big auxiliary tank and tool box in the bed!
Always better to have lots of truck!

Only if the need is there. Not very many will tell you that a 450 dually is needed to tow a 10,000 lb trailer. Now a 20K trailer might get some 450 dually fans.
The math doesn't lie. People do.

We bought a truck to match what i was planning to buy in the future. Well the DW like the Montana.
Tow weight is ok, but pin weight is a little heavy.
But our truck works for us now.
Buy for the future.
