Direct TV Rip Off

We originally had Direct TV installed on our stick house about 4 years ago. Free DVR, free boxes for 3 other TV's, and free install for everything. When we sold house and went full time in 3400RL we only needed to keep main DVR so we sent everything else back. Loved Travler dish on top of rig and are having installed on new 3725RL. Now we need another box for bedroom TV so called Direct TV. $126.00 for the box, tax, and shipping! Should have kept one of the old boxes I guess, but what a rip off! With all the money invested in the Travler dish it isn't like you can switch service easily. You would think that Direct TV would take care of existing customers a little bit better.

Go to Directv.com and see if you are eligible for an upgrade. If you pay the monthly protection fee, you can upgrade every two years for no charge. Worth a try, if all else fails, call them and ask to speak to a customer retention specialist, they can waive the charges if they are sweet-talked enough (Hint!)

And, the battle is raging over Direct TV's cancelling the Weather Channel. The forums are not being very nice to Direct right now....!

Our Directv DVR has been acting up and shuts off and will not come back on without a reboot. Directv would not help because they want to test on-line when it is working, and of course it comes and goes and it can take 15 minutes on the phone to get a live tech. My wife dropped it on the floor, yelled whoops! and I was then able to talk to Directv and tell them it does not work and they are sending me a replacement receiver.

I do not understand the big todo. Weather.com is available to us wherever we go and we use it extensively via the internet and smartphone access. Local information is available via over the air antennas in other locations. Directv has provided an alternative weather service channel (which I have not even looked at). If we were solely at the mercy of the Weather Channel for weather related information, what would we do if the power went out and it was not available. As always, my opinion, we have had Directv for years, they have always treated us fairly, and we intend to keep on keeping on with them.

Dish also wanted to charge $100+ for us to get another Joey (Joey wirelessly connects other TVs in the home with the Hopper receiver),(Dish Hopper with Sling gives you all features of the Hopper throughout the home with HD DVR capabilities wirelessly). So I just too my receiver and portable Tailgater antenna from the Monty and now I have Dish TV in the basement of the home for $7 a month. Then when we hit the road we take it with us.

Willing to bet the Weather Channel wanted an increase or DirecTv is cutting to keep costs down. Most all networks are asking for huge increases every year. DirecTv and Viacom had a showdown last year over it.

Direct TV is an unreliable ripoff and we dropped them like a hot potato. They have horrible deceptive business practices. If you decide to do business with them, ensure you read ALL the fine print. I will NEVER do business with them again.

What I read was that DirecTV wanted to pay less and the Weather Channel wanted a slight increase.

Joe. I lease my boxes for $6 a month. Don't buy anymore. They become obsolete to fast. I exchange for the latest and greatest every two years. I have had DirecTV since it first became a service. If you learn how to use the system and its service center, it is a great service.

The DirecTV will fit on top of the dresser. I put a clip tie down strap on top of the dresser and screwed it into the top of the dresser with a 90 degree flexible drill bit. Then I clamped down the box. I put a BluRay player on the other side. Works great and puts the boxes out of the way and doesn't take up dresser space. Good luck

Agree. We have had Directv since 2003, and with the exception of a few irritants over the year, feel we get great service.

I heard that Direct dropped Weather Channel due to customer complaints about all of TWC "reality shows" and less weather (Live on the 8's and current weather and forecasts).

I really doubt customer complaints about content affected any decision by DirecTV. If it did there would be hundreds of channels dropped. Like the others have implied - follow the money. One wants more and the other wants less. They and Dish have done this dance with broadcasters before. Usually there is a compromise after some period of posturing. Of course all the disputes I remember are for channels which have a following. I am not sure the Weather Channel is that popular. In seven years I have never watched it AFAIK.

Well I for one miss it as I checked every morning before going to work what the weather was going to be in several of the places that I wish I was fulltiming at. My favorite places were listed and I would go thru them in this order, Yuma Az, McComb Miss (daughter lives there), Corpus Christi Tx, Fort Myers Fl, and Cabo San Lucas, the latter being a place that I probably would not go to due to not feeling safe driving down there! Of course these were winter escapes that I have been dreaming of after I join the LIFE!!!!! But that's ok I still check them on my smartphone or should I say smarter then me phone!!! HAHA

We use the WeatherBug app and find it is very good. Have not tried the desktop version, but hear it is also very good.

11 years with directv and never a single problem. With the service contract we get free upgrades every two years and they will come anywhere to do a service call. We now get weather nation....weather is weather. The weather channel is on our phone. Weather is easy to get from multiple sources.

I used to have Directv but they kept increasing the price so I paid my last bill and cancelled the service. They then sent me a bill for 0.06 and when I called them about it they got ugly and told me that I would need to send my two, four year old receivers back. I told them that they were boxed up and they could send me return labels and I would. Those receivers are still boxed up and sitting in my storage room. I am still waiting on the labels. That has been over 5 years ago. I never sent in the 0.06 either. I love it when some Directv salesperson stops me at Sam's Club and wants to know if they can show me how Directv can save me money. I would have probably switched back at some time in the future, but that 0.06 bill will make certain that I won't.

Interesting... I've had the exact opposite experience. Luck of the draw I suppose.
