2017 GMC 1500 With 6.2 V-8

Anybody have a GMC or Chev 1500 with a 6.2 V-8. My Dealer is trying to get me to replace my 2015 GMC 2500 with the 6.0, 4:10 rear-end, it loves gas. Dealer tells me that New GMC 1500 will more then handle my Mountaineer 285 and be a lot better on gas mileage especially when not pulling. This one has a 6.2 V-8 with 3:73 rear-end and now has an eight speed transmission. Can put 2100 lbs. on the pick-up. All I asked him about the diesel when I went in for a oil change. I don't pull over 150 miles and not often. Anybody have one on these trucks and hows the mileage?

Quick answer is RUN AWAY from this dealer as quick as you can ,he is just a salesman trying to sell a truck that is really not the right tool for the job and telling you it's O.K.towing a Mountaineer 285 that weighs about 10K lbs DRY (depends on the year) with a 1/2 Ton of ANY BRAND, too many reasons to list ,keep your 2500...End of story

I don't know what your camper weighs or the tow ratings of a Chevy with a new 6.2. I do know the F150 is rated to tow over 12000 pounds with a carrying capacity of over 3000 pounds. I'm not trying to sell you a Ford just pointing out some 1/2 ton trucks are rated to tow a lot of weight. I would still rather have a 3/4 ton truck to pull much of a camper.

I agree. Be sure to run the numbers on ANY truck before you sign on the dotted line.

Tow capacity for a 1500 Chevy with 6.2 is 12000 with 1780 pounds carrying capacity when properly equipped. If you fall with in this and you would like the truck go for it. When not pulling very far or fast a gas powered truck is just fine. I've always said don't buy a diesel truck unless you need one.

Your profile states that you are a retired truck driver so you should have an idea of weight capacities. I wouldn't tow with a 1/2 ton truck of any brand. In my opinion, it's just not enough truck to stop the combined weight of truck and trailer which is a whole hell of a lot more important than pulling it. The running gear and brakes on a 3/4 or 1 ton is a lot more stout than any 1/2 ton. Pulling it short distances only occasionally is not relevant. The need to stop in an emergency can happen at any time.

If I only towed 150 miles and only on occasion I would keep the truck I had and not worry about towing mileage. That dealer is only trying to make a buck and is not concerned about your families safety!

Sorry but I don't see a problem pulling this camper if GMs tow numbers say you are within the limits. Everybody always says you haft to go by those numbers and if you are within those numbers I see no problem, especially if you are pulling 150 miles.

All vehicles are made to stop their GVWR not the GCWR.

Ok well first you have limited your options. The day will come when you will want to take a much longer trip. Or much more likely you will want a new rig. The 150 or 1500 series is just not the truck for RVing. Better said not the truck for pulling a 5er like the Montana, Mountaineer rigs. JMHO

The 6.2 is an aluminum engine and is not HD rated.
Keep your 6.0 it's a much stronger engine.

You do not want to be running at the top end of the stats. Give yourself some headroom. I have a 2015 2500 with the standard 6.0 and would NOT go to a lesser rig than a 2500 ... best of luck.

I don't believe or trust any car dealer or truck dealer. They will tell you anything to make deal. The manufactures don't give you the proper info to make the right decision.

12,000 lb max towing means a stripped regular cab.
2017 v8 gas Chevy engine delivers 460 lb ft of torque; not something that you want to get caught towing even a pop-up camper in the mountains with.

Bornbroke I don't know what the pin weight of your 285 is, but I do know what ours is. It's 2800lb, a 1500 isn't going to carry that.

Wow. I saw a Toyota tundra pulling a high country, and he WAS having a bad time. Not only could he not get to even 60 MPH on the highway he was swaying like he was pulling a bumper lugger. NOT SMART
