Automated Safety Hitch System
I was reading an article describing the Automated Safety Hitch System in RV Consumer magazine (Feb 2013, Vol 3, Issue 2). I have emailed the company in Denton, Texas but have not heard from them yet for a price quote. Their website automatedsafetyhitchsystem.com is really interesting. Anyone else seen or heard about this product?

I saw something very similar to this tow dolly at the Camping World there in New Braunfels a few years ago. I remember many, many years ago seeing cars with these dollies pulling mobil homes. They had a single ball hitch. The thing that stuck me about the one at CW was a three point hitch, the dolly wheels didn't swivel in a turn so I recon you were sliding the dolly tires on the pavement during a close turn. This one also appesrs to be a three point connection couldn't tell if the wheels swiveled this new one. I designed and built several similar dollies for folks that road motorcycles and pulled heavy trailers--including me--had only a single ball connection between the motorcycle and the dolly, worked very well. I think it is a good idea.

That system looks similar to what Lucy and Ricky used to pull "The Long, Long Trailer". Just think if you get one of those you can pull a Monty with an F150 EcoBoost.
Now for the real world, I don't think I can fully go along with all their claims. I can't really see better stability putting another set of wheels between the TV and RV. Seems to me the hitch mounted directly over the axles of a dually would give you much more stability than having it another 5 feet or so behind the rear bumper. I do see where it would let you pull a bigger RV with a smaller TV, provided you had the power to pull it, maybe a hitch on the back of a Corvette to pull a Monty. I think I'll stick with my Dually.

You know they show the Tundra pulling that big ole space ship, would love to see it stop it from 60 MPH. Experiencing how the dolly worked behind my motorcycles, I will say it provided more stability and better handling.

A motorcycle is a little different animal. Having pulled a few strange combos with a tractor I'll be leaving my setup the way it is.

Basically, it is another axle with disc brakes that is added to tow vehicle. Yes, stopping issues are critical. They do use a 3 point connection setup--so just like the rear tires on the tow vehicle do not rotate like the front tires when you turn a corner, these tires do not rotate during a turn--they track the rear tires. Also the base price is about $10,000--with a few extras and tax--expect to hit near $11,500 or more. I am sticking with my tow vehicle as it works great.

We have one that I took back out to Joe and am trying to sell it. As far as stopping I can say that we would have wrecked if I didn't have the hitch on. I know for a fact that the tires did lock up on the hitch and did what it's suppose to do. We used it more for being able to haull our fourwheeler in the bed of the truck. We made two trips to West Yellowstone with it from So. Florida. Joe is trying to sell it for me because we are going to go with a MH and won't need it. He tore it down and repainted it, put some new upgrades on that were designed after we bought it. The tires do turn when you turn. Or you can leave them locked down and they just track.

That's a nice extra, but I'm wondering how many people would want to pay over $10K for it. I haven't seen any on the road during my trips. Thanks for sharing this information.

I agree 100%. I'd rather upgrade to IS and disc brakes and keep the left over money in my bank account. I'd bet money that the disc brake upgrade on the trailer would out perform this for stopping.
