DEF Platinum???

Has anybody been using DEF Platinum?

The manufacturer makes some pretty strong claims about how it is better for a vehicles emissions system and therefore worth double the cost of their standard product (which makes it about three times the cost of the bargain brand). It seems to me that it would be difficult to tell if its working better. A bit like Chevron fuel saying that it is better than whatever the grocery store has in their pumps, if they both get you there. Has anyone seen a measurable difference in fuel mileage, DEF consumption or anything else?

I always fill mine at truck stops when getting fuel. I figure if the big rigs use it, so can I.

They must be using a better grade of pee to make it.

The composition is an ISO chemical standard that everyone has to meet. What makes theirs better?

What I noticed on the DEF Platinum box: with continued use it would improve life of sensors ... stopped reading after that - Walmart Def was $7.00 for 2 1/2 gal.

DEF is DEF. Whether you buy it from Walmart or Campers World. All DEF needs to meet Fed standards.

DEF in the truck lanes is fresher as they cycle through much more. You have no idea how long any DEF in a box has sat on the shelf or in a warehouse.

SCR deposits are a known problem with DEF solidifying and building up in the exhaust stream. How much of a problem is not clear, and not something I have heard much about. I think maybe more so for long haul OTR rigs. BlueDEF Platinum claims to reduce those deposits.

From their web site:

"BlueDEF Platinum is a mixture of high-purity synthetic urea, deionized water, and a proprietary formulation featuring the companies new Advanced System Shield Technology, which significantly reduces harmful deposits that commonly build up in modern diesel exhaust systems with SCR. With regular use, Old World said, these harmful deposits are significantly reduced, providing optimum fuel economy, saving money on costly repairs, and sustaining the life of the system."

Truck stop DEF is never completely new. If storage tank is half full and they refill it, then it is 1/2 new and 1/2 old. Down to half and they fill it again and it is 1/2 new, 1/4 newest old, and 1/4 oldest old. Down to half and they fill it again and it is 1/2 new, 1/4 newest old, 1/8 next newest old, and 1/8 oldest old. And on and on it goes. Concentration of old diminishes over time but is never completely eliminated.

When you see better, improved you need to ask better improved for who, me or the manufacturer. It may be I don’t know.

I used the Walmart DEF in my 2014 3500 SRW with no problems. The only thing I did not like was the poor fitting screw on spout. Finally gave up and bought a funnel…but lately the screw on spout seems to be improved and does not leak. At some point in the past few months the price went down from $7.88 to $6.88.

A couple of months ago I thought I was getting close to needing a DEF fill and I bought a jug at Walmart, put it in my hot garage. Weeks went by and no fill was needed until I made a short trip. Pulled into a Walmart I passed and filled it up for $6.88. I intend to use the one in the garage to pour and kill weeds on my fence line. At $6.88 I would rather use the fresher stuff from the store shelf.

I once found DEF on sale at a Wal-Mart (don't remember where, we were traveling). It was on sale for $3 for a box. Checked the date code, 2014.
Pass.
Always check the date code.
