Solid steps vs. folding steps? - Page 2 - Montana Owners Club

I have a dumb question. How easy is it to take the solid stairs off of the 5ver? Maybe I will just mount them at my home when we are about to go on a trip, and at the RV storage lot, just use a step stool to get into the RV?

I really don't want my steps inside the trailer. Changed the OEM steps to new aluminum ones, very easy to unfold, steady and look great.

Bob, a 2015 did not come with the solid steps, so what are you talking about when you say you changed the OEM steps to the new aluminum ones?

I don't like the "new" steps at all. Just my opinion, if you do great. I thought at 70 I was mature, guess not old enough or at 210# heavy enough? Must be some that are extra heavy or have equilibrium problems to find the OEM 'springy'. 13 months ago I passed on all with those steps.... happy with my 2017!

I’m not fat or old myself John and I recommend you not call any of the ladies FAT for sure!! I am quite capable of getting around but the OEM steps feel rather flimsy to me. But then I weld and work in the oilfield where things are built a lot more robust than average....

Read the previous. They state mature and more feel a need for the steps. I'm glad as LCI makes money with every sale. If they don't bounce for me at 210, when do they bounce,,

I said that because my sister who is 19 years older than I had difficulty with the steps. To the point where it was embarrassing for me when showing off the new coach!!

I am 59 6’2” and 200lbs. I can just about walk a wire BUT our 4 step folding OEM steps DO bounce like a springboard!!

I reaaaallllyyyy don’t like the folders!!! If you do that’s fine

I should add that there is no adjustment on the OEM steps either and if the ground is unlevel our bottom step sometimes has to be folded back over the third step and it is not flat on the bottom which makes it a tripping hazard

And then there are the grandkids who love to bounce down the steps because they are “springy”. A 8 year old only weighing what maybe 50lbs calls the steps “springy”. Yeah they are springy

Wife and I love the solid steps, it rain several days on us during our last trip and it was of no consequence. Just placed an ol towel down, very little water transferred inside, most left the treads while lifting up. As stated by a previous member, a bench brush or whisk broom gets rid of any dirt or debris. I consider the new solid steps much safer than the fold out we’ve had on previous units.

To clarify my previous post I said that I would not upgrade to solid steps, because I would not want the steps inside the trailer. I changed my OEM fold up outside steps to aluminium.

I bought the 1st version of the Mor-Ryde solid steps. This might be a cure all for those who have trouble with solid steps in storage. My steps have a latch that snaps on to brackets on the rv. My steps are the kind you snap on and off of the trailer. The steps are light and easy to handle. The down side is when you take them off you have to store them in your storage compartment but they are real lite and can be stored to one side of your compartment on there edge. I also have the hand rail that drops into slots after set-up. With not having to swing the steps out from the rv i would think you would have room to install the steps in tight spaces as the steps don't have to be raised off the ground to install but just pressed up against the rv to snap in place. You could contact Mor-Ryde to see if you could still get these steps. The brackets are very easy to install with to long screws for each bracket. There is obviously no perfect solution but this might be something that works for a few like me as my wife has 2 artificial knees and this is much safer for her. One fall coming out of the rv face first could be the end of our travels.

If you do not have the steps with a gas piston lift assist, there are just 8-10 screws holding them down. I would be worried about wearing out the screws if you run them in and out a few times removing the steps.

DW has some mobility issues. We went from the fold up "spring board" steps to the swing up solid steps. DW is a much happier camper. Yes, we get a bit of dirt in when they swing in. I lessen the amount of dirt by sweeping before swinging them up and in. I also bang them with my hand when they are half way up. The amount of dirt that comes in is trivial.

Where we store ours, if I move over to the left I can deploy our steps and still be within our designated space.

seems to be a personal choice, if the solid ones were on our coach that would be ok. Has anyone who switched to the solid ones utilized the space where the fold up ones were? If we were to change I would like to add a pull out compartment or tool box. If someone has done this please post some pics.

Search the threads,I think its listed under "Improvements and modifications". Several have bought/installed a tool box in the fold up step area of their units. Step manufacturers sell those boxes.

A series of defective OEM steps must have been produced and many have received them.

We have had OEM steps on all 6 of our Rv's and they are not spring board steps at least ours are not. We must have got a set of good ones. If you have disabilities or the steps are not sturdy enough for you then you need to go to a more sturdy step.

Helen injured her leg and is on crutchs. It is imposible for her to get up the OEM steps without assistence if this was permanent we would need to have a lift. She would also have difficulty going up the steps to the bedroom in the 5th wheel.

If one wants to replace the OEM step for any reason just do it no need for explaination or justification.

We happen to be OK with the OEM steps if we were not we would replace them.

I can feel for you viper in the need to use a storage facility in tahoe. Life is too short for that. Morryde does have a removable step that solves the fold down issue or at least that is what I remember.

We have had both and really like the new solid steps. Of course it’s a slight consideration on the spacing but it’s not a big deal. We wouldn’t go back.

OK, Dan and Brenda are correct. I have been in contact with MORryde, and they do have the same solid step, but it is a quick disconnect, so you can store it in the bed of your truck, or underneath in storage on the 5th wheel, and it deploys in seconds. They even show you how to measure and do the installation yourself, if you don't want your dealer to do it? See the attached PDF's
