You are limited to what is sold at the pump. Only know of two types, standard and biodiesel sold at stations/truck stops. Use standard, and for the most part, only product available anyway. Many of us add Ctan diesel additive to bump up the octane and for lubrication.

Type? I try and frequent heavily trafficked stations. Even with that I worry about quality. These new engines with their tighter specs don't leave a lot of room for bad fuel. Having said that I'll be on the 10k mile fuel filter change cycle. Hopefully overkill but just another insurance policy.
I do miss my 05 Ram whenever I fill. She would run on mud if I asked her to (slight exaggeration).

Agree that you get what you get. I don't add additives, but do change the fuel filter regularly, when prompted.

There are actually four different diesels- off road(for the farmers and etc), #2 diesel, #1 diesel(which is normally only sold in the winter or cold climate areas) and the biodiesel. I've used them all but not in the Duramax. Can't use the off road because it is for farmers and construction equipment and it has a dye in it to tell whether you've used it. That dye is VERY HARD to dispose of also. It can be seen, if you are inspected by a DOT officer even after four or five tanks of fuel. I normally fuel up at truck stops when on the road and that is #2 diesel and is for over the road useage but I have used both the #1 and the biodiesel when needed or having to. When on the road towing, I normally add some additive and in the winter when it is cold I use it even more and if I can get #1 diesel I fill with it because it has the additive added already to stop jelling. I put the additive in the #2 so it keeps the system lubed and I getting "a little" better mileage off of each tank too(not much just about a mile or two a gallon more)but it all adds up. I change the filter every other oil change unless the % us still above the 50% and that normally is not the case. I use my 3500 both for over the road and daily driving. I don't use many small stations that you don't see any diesel PUs entering that I don't know. I NEVER fill up at a station that has a tanker truck unloading fuel when I'm ready to fuel up. Don't need that headache of nasty fuel and dirt entering the filter even though you still get some no matter what. Used to be that the stations had filters on the pumps but not anymore. Like I said previously, I normally fill up at truck stops( Flying J, Pilot, Love's and even QT's that have the diesel pumps or a truck stop area. Well "that's my story and I'm sticking to it!"

Like I said, I only know two. Farm does not count, illegal on the road, winter does not count, since no travel in cold weather. Weather was not cited in the question. At least for ford diesels, dealer position strongly recommends the diesel additive.

There are a few, very few, stations that sell a Preimum Diesel fuel, one is the Kwik Fill Truck Stop in Geneva, Ohio, right off I90. I try to use it when I can find it as it does give just a little better performance and MPG.

I have to tell you, I don't think my Ford liked Bio when I was forced to buy it. I was in Tenn where that's all I could buy. It acted like I had power drop. Since then I travel with 30 Gallons of #2 that I had to the Bio Diesel. It may have been my imagination, but no problems since mixing.

My dealer recommended I stay away from Bio. I also fill up at the halfway mark, always at a different station, hopefully if I get bad diesel, it will mix with the good. Have to say after driving diesels for 14 years, never got a bad tank of diesel although I ALMOST pumped gas in a couple of times.

If I'm not mistaken, I think I read somewhere that the Bio diesel actually is very good for providing lubrication to the injectors and other parts that need the lubrication. Our 2012 Duramax runs just fine on the Bio, but I'm sure there may be a bit of loss of mileage. A cousin who has an older Duramax recently pumped some Bio into his, and he said he thought the fuel system failed. Until he went through a couple more tanks of #2 diesel, did his truck start running OK. Don't know what the difference is, but the manual on our 2012 does say Bio diesel is OK to use.
