Fresh water pump runs but no water?

Our friends pulled into the campground and its their first trip of the season (we are in the Red Desert in Wyoming). They have a 2004 rl 2980 Montana, They have had it a while and its always worked fine). They filled up the fresh water tank and turned the pump on and nothing but air comes out the inside faucets.

They then ran several hoses to a park spigot and water ran normally when using the city connection, both hot and cold fsucets,(air came out first until the all lines filled.

There is no water coming out the bottom or anywhere else.

Another website suggested we find the water pump and look for a loose radiator clamp connection.

So before we tear the unit apart, do you have any other suggestions for us? Also does anyone know where the water pump is located?

Thanks for reading this and for any suggestions. I am new to this website so I hope I haven't down anything wrong with this post.

Is there, per chance, a by pass valve at the water pump designed to help winterize the vehicle which might be in the wrong position?

If you water pump runs when you do not have a faucet open, then you may have a loose connection. If water were leaking the pump would kick on when there is a demand.

As nunya said, is the water fill valve, if it has one, in the "normal" position, and not "fill" position?

Others will be along with more sane advise.

The 2004 doesn't have the switch between power fill and city water as the newer ones do (we had a 2005 3400rl). I agree with Tim43 that the bypass valve is a likely culprit. Listen for the pump sound and there should be an access near it. I'm not quite sure about the 2980, but it may be under the kitchen sink area. There are two valves. One will be the hot water bypass (also check that to make sure it didn't get left in position when winterizing also). The other one should have a hose connected near it that goes in the pink winterizing solution bottle. Good luck and keep us posted. If that isn't it, then you will already be in the right place to look or air leaks from a loose clamp.

I would agree w/Ron, re. the valve by the hose for antifreeze pick up. Mine is under the sink. Pump would be sucking air from the short hose. Flip that valve to access tank water. Hope that works?!!

Ron and Terrie and Capn Ron,

You were spot on in your diagnosis as the valves were shut off! Well done! My friend and his wife are happy and have water!

Clear skies
