Flying J Gas Increases

I drove by the local Flying J yesterday and gas was $1.639. Today it is at $1.779. Could the previous "Flying J" post be part of the increase. I see that oil jumped over $6.00 yesterday.

No oil decreasd yesterday -2.45 to 39.91.This AM it is up slightly at 40.31(bloomberg.com). The slight increase is due to a spike in prices a few weeks ago. One can monitor energy prices at www. Bloomberg.com as they do not shut down at COB USA. It is not 4m everywhere.

Prices here in Manhattan KS went up from 10 to 14 cents in the past week (depending on the station)? Some I attribute to the Students leaving for Christmas break (prices always go up some when they leave for any length of time ), the rest because of OPEC and world market prices, and some because of weather. Oh -- also, AAA announced this morning that due to low fuel prices, the number of people traveling (driving) this holiday season will be UP. So that also has an impact.

The prices have remained steady around here. OPEC has had no effect on the world market prices. They decreased production 2.5 million bbls this time around and 1.5 million last time around and the price of a bbl of oil went down. Could it be good old American Greed..Folks may travel for the Holidays so lets gouge them.

Flying J gas prices in NJ dropped 3 cents from last Friday to Monday (yesterday). Yea. Their diesel was higher than others I saw, however.

We were in Nashville this weekend and I saw diesel for 2.159 at several stations. I had filled at Flying J on the way to Nashville at 2.219 and I thought that was great. Then I get into Nashville and see the 2.159 and could have kicked myself. Around Linden TN diesel is going for 2.319... Dave

Just saw on the news where Flying J has filed for bankruptcy. Don't know what that has to do with anything though.

Deisel her in Chico, CA at Safeway is 2.27. I have a $1.00 per gallon discount so will fill up tonight.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

This story made our local news this morning.

http://www.wnep.com/Global/story.asp?S=9573873

They ran out of Diesel, regular gas, and mid-grade gas.

There was nothing about it on the Flying J Gas Price site as being out or low.

Great, just got my Flying J card... I'm sure they will be back to full operations shortly. Doesn't sound like this bankruptcy will put them out of business - just a re-organization. Of course with the economy in the shape it's in, who knows.

A commercial on TV yesterday showed a financial brokerage service agent speaking to a potential client and one of the phrases used by the agent was, "...and my experience in this type of market...". WHAT??? There has not been this "type of market" since the Great Depression - as most economic analysts now acknowledge. He didn't seem that old...

If someone tells you that they can give you financial advice because they know what things will be looking like by this time next year - run.

Hopefully Flying J will still be around. Maybe mergers ahead?

We've seen inconsistencies in the prices of fuel at Flying J's that are only a few miles apart in the same state!

Is there any rhyme or reason why fuel is a different price at all three big stations at the same intersection?

Actually there is. Depends on if they are owner operated or company owned stations. If company owned the company sets the price. If franchised the owner operator is not always required to hold the company price. Two BP stations will look exactly alike. One owner operated, one company operated...two different prices.

More than likely it the TAX's in some cases each county will have different tax rates and each State for. Get ready 2009 will bring higher Tax's for Gas and Diesel, it will be easier to sell to us than a raising income TAX. GBY...

Rich,

We were just recently in one of those truck stop places, sorry CRS, can't remember exactly where, but Flying J, T/A, and Pilot all within a few yards of each other had significant differences in prices for diesel.

I wonder first of all why they would all be on the same corner, and second, why they would all have different prices.

Diesel is diesel for me, and I will always buy the cheap stuff.

We sort of have to be aware of the diesel we buy as we need ULSD and we need to be aware of the cetane rating and the lubricity of the fuel. We try to stay with Shell premium whenever possible and to stay away from those no name stations as you never know what the diesel is. We always noted that in our town all the stations regardless of brand would all change price almost at the same time. Do you think they communicated with one another.??? It would not be good business practice if one station would be several cents less than others..That could lead to a price war and the stations don't want that. We have a good friend who is the Owner operator of a BP sation and he is not bound by the company set price of fuel. The owner operators profit margin on the sale of fuel is not all that great so he may not have much room to adjust and still make a profit after expences. That corner must be a really high volume corner.
