I bought a used 2005 6.0 with 58000 mi 4 years ago first trip out EGR cooler failed,(Extended Warranty Covered) After extended warrant ran out I went ahead spent $3500 for a EGR bypass , New Head studs and Gasket. I do a coolant flush every Spring,
Replace the motorcraft coolant cap with a STANT cap $5.99 investment (the motorcraft cap has a weaker spring and looses its temper causing lower pressure in the coolant system causing coolant breakdown. Some good videos here http://powerstrokehelp.com/

I had problems with my last truck 2004 6.0. I had the coolers replaced 3 times and then right after the 100,000 mile warranty the head gaskets went. Since I had all the work done at the same dealer I was able to get them to give me a trade in valve as if the truck was in good shape our I would see them in court. They did and I got a 2010 6.4 which has 69,000 miles on it now with no problems. If you look at the 6.4s they have the big coolers that the 6.0s don't have. I think the stock coolers on the 6.0s is the problem. The ford form was very informative.

Well we’ve got the truck back and will be heading out tomorrow for a test run on our first camping trip this year. Had a lot of work done on the engine; head gaskets with studs, after market coolers for better coolant flow. The mechanic seemed to think that my oil cooler was plugged. Supposedly it was a new one last July that Ford put on it. Glad to be getting some PM done with after-market parts. I have more confidence in the truck now than what I did.

Our 6.4 l Diesel 73K miles with not a problem. The Montana is another story .We were to late for a FCRV rally in Wyoming due to the Montana being in for repairs and Both Helen and I have some medical issues that need to be taken care of so we are pretty much grounded again for the second summer in a row. maybe some local outings.

For those of you that use gauges to monitor your coolant temperatures, do you notice the temp going up on a hot day? We went out and the coolant temperature got up to about 222° +/- on a hill but it did cool back off after we topped the hill. Keep in mind that without these added gauges the normal gauges wouldn’t have shown anything and there wasn’t any indication of a problem.

I was concerned at first and think maybe that a radiator flush might be in order but everything went well and from what I can find out this is quite the normal temperature range on a hot day under load. What do you think?

You are wright. The OEM gages are idiot gages. They are little better than idiot lights. On my truck my coolant high warning is set at 230 degrees and engine oil warning I have set at 230 also. I have never had either one go much higher than 240. 230, 240 for brief periods is not going to hurt your engine.

Oh yes we have after market gauges on the Ford .We measure all for Ford parameters as well as the pre turbo EGT. We have not been that high yet but close.
