Send'em Up (For Wayne, Semper Fi)

In addition to communicating with the local Air Traffic Control facility, all aircraft in the Persian Gulf AOR are required to give the Iranian Air Defense Radar (military) a ten minute 'heads up' if they will be transiting Iranian airspace.

This is a common procedure for commercial aircraft and involves giving them your call sign, transponder code, type aircraft, and points of origin and destination.

I just flew with a guy who overheard this conversation on the VHF Guard(emergency) frequency 121.5 MHz while flying from Europe to Dubai. It's too good not to pass along .

The conversation went like this...

Iranian Air Defense Radar: 'Unknown aircraft you are in Iranian airspace. Identify yourself.'
Aircraft: 'This is a United States aircraft. I am in Iraqi airspace.'
Air Defense Radar:'You are in Iranian airspace. If you do not depart our airspace we will launch interceptor aircraft!'
Aircraft: 'This is a United States Marine Corps FA-18 fighter. Send'em up, I'll wait!'
Air Defense Radar: (no response ... total silence)

Thanks for that one. It was too good not to pass along to my brother and our best friends who have two grandson Marines in Afghanistan. Wayne will love it, too.

Hey, that was great! Thanks for sharing. I've cut and pasted also and sent it along to many of our friends outside of MOC too.

Ah! Just great. There is no finer pilot in the world than a Marine pilot. (Not to debunk you other pilots, but it's just the way us Marine feel.

Time Frame: 1968-1969
Place: South Vietnam
First 200 days at a little place called "charlie two," One click below the DMZ Near Gio Linh.
the last 5 months were on top of Hill 55, South of Da Nang.

We used to sit out and watch the air strikes whenever we could. We could always tell the branch of service.
Air Force run - 1000 feet off the ground
Navy run - 500 feet off the ground
Marine Corps run - Some times you lost the plane because of the tree line. That's why they call it "Close Air Support."
