Registering Monty in California bought in NV

This is for any California people out there. I bought my Monty 3820FK in Reno, Nevada, and they will not register it for me, since I live in Calif. So after I get the new 5th wheel trailer in about a week, do I just take all the paperwork from the RV dealer in NV to a Calif. DMV, and pay the 7k sales tax and registration fees, etc., or do they need to actually see the new trailer in person? The reason why I am asking, is the DMV in Truckee, CA, is tiny, and I scoped it out, and would not know where to park 60 feet of truck and trailer? Anybody know the ins and outs about this in California? Thanks

We bought our 5'er in Las Vegas at time of sale they gave us a permit to travel with we then brought our 5'er home and did all DMV here and yes they had to see it to verify the vin number we paid some sales tax in Nevada I believe it was 6% and they sent it by fed ex ahead of us and all the paperwork needed to regester to our local DMV office so when we got home they were ready for us. We then paid the rest of sales tax for the correct amount. It was very easy to do. If you call you dmv and ask where you need to bring this unit so it's easy for them and you they my send a agent out to meet you. That's what I did and she came to a location that worked for us. Reno sells all kinds of autos rv's and trailers to folks here in California I'm sure the dealer will have a good idea of how to do this for you. Good luck and happy camping

I would take the paperwork in to DMV or call first. If the trailer weighs over 15000lbs keep in mind that you will need a RV certificate added to your drivers license just like you have to do for a motorcycle. You will have to take a written RV test and then take a drivers test.

Jim,

Keystone lists the trailer as 13,995 pounds. No telling what it will weigh after loaded with water and supplies? So what number will they be looking for?

The CA DMV bases the drivers license requirement on the GVWR of the Montana. That is listed on the sticker with the VIN near the drivers side propane locker. What is actually weighs empty, or loaded doesn't matter. Only the GVWR (north of 15,500 as I recall) counts.

California did away with 6 months or a year out of state after the sale.....it does not matter anymore..YOU will pay when it comes into the state. And....yes....get it vin inspected by the CHP.....there is an office in Truckee.....most likely at the scales....then paperwork to DMV. It is really simple...I did it from buying in Oregon and then to Ca. where I used to live.

I will keep you all posted, since I can not cheat the system, because of may reasons, one of them being my son is a CHP officer, but here is what I know so far. I have to get a Non-Commercial Class "A" license. To do that I need to fill out form DL44 and the health form 546. No doctor needs to sign it, just fill it out. Then I am going in tomorrow to take the regular drivers license written test again, and then a Trailer/RV test. Then the vision test. Then when I pick up the Monty this Thursday, I plan on going to a parking lot a block away from the DMV and asking them to come do the vin check, and pay my registration fees and sales tax. They will do a simple vehicle safety check, and a pre-trip inspection test too. Then I have an appointment a couple of weeks from now at the Sacramento Commercial drivers test facility, and they will make me do a skills test and a driving test with the 5th wheel.

Having gone through this, you have all the steps correct. Many folks never can understand the CA non-commercial class A requirements.

Be aware the first question you will be asked at the Sacto commercial DMV office will likely be "how did you get the RV here?". As you do not have a license to legally tow it, the answer is to have someone who is licensed take it there. A real PIA for many of us. It pays to have a commercial trucker friend.

Allegedly, you can tow a smaller (under 15K) 5th wheel and do the skills test. But even that requires Restriction 41 license.

I passed my tests today, and they gave me a temporary permit? I am assuming that is for me to get the 5th wheel to the testing facility? Otherwise, it would be crazy for me to hire a trucker to take it there?

A temporary permit is something I never heard of. I didn't get one after passing all the written and physical requirements. Perhaps they have finally come to their senses. Does it say it is a temporary non-commercial permit or is it like the learners permit new drivers receive (where they can drive with an older licensed passenger)? Please keep us informed as you progress.

Buy out of State often. My dealers collected all DMV fess and sent them to Ca DMV. I can tell you the DMV never asked me about my 41 class restriction authorizing 10-15 K towing. I will agree if over 15,000 you must get Recreational Class A. Note they will measure RV (done that 3 xs on RVs brought into state). Check all the plates on RV to see they were original. Pretty easy process. Big mistake neighbor made was showing up at DMV the day of actual driving test with out a commercial licensed driver! So do take someone with you the day of test !

This makes absolutely no sense what so ever. Two people here have said I need to have a commercial driver bring me to the Sacramento DMV test center to get my Non-Commercial Class "A" certificate. I have a really dumb question. They are going to test me on how well I back it up, and merge onto the freeway etc. How the heck am I supposed to have any experience doing this, if I am not allowed to tow the darn thing? I'm picking it up this Thursday, and the dealer said they are giving me a 15 day permit. My test then is only 7 days after I pick it up. I plan on going to some large parking lots and practice. So technically if you guys are right, how is any one supposed to get ready for the test, if they are not allowed to tow the 5th wheel?

No you have your permit. I may have overstated. Problem happens if you fail test and get jerk inspector. We have one in Redding. Your right, your permit should allow you right to take test. Oh I spent lots time in parking lots. Parallel parking was only part that causes some distress.

Yikes!!, when would you parallel park 58 feet of truck and 5th wheel? :-) Our first trip I have planned has 9 RV stops, which are all 50 amp pull thru spots. I plan on unhooking our truck, if I want to cruise around towns? :-)

Note: ask around the truck schools in your area, they can tell you the route and where DMV has you park. I found out and went to practice. The cones were left out. Helps to ask!

Never fear, CA DMV will *NOT* ask you to parallel park your RV. From the CA DMV Non-Commercial Class A Requirements book:
https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/?1dmy&urile=wcmath:/dmv_content_en/dmv/pubs/dl648/dl648pt3
  • Skills Tests. Skills tests are designed to demonstrate your skill in stopping, backing in a straight line, completing a right turn around a cone or marker, and backing into a camping space. These tests are done at low speed and test how well you can maneuver the vehicle.
  • Driving Test. The driving test includes entering and exiting a freeway, freeway driving with lane changes, right and left turns into one-way and two-way traffic, railroad crossings, and driving on a grade or steep hill, etc. You may make an appointment by calling 1-800-777-0133. Online appointments are not available for this type of driving test.

The hardest part of the test is (IMHO) the "Pre-trip Inspection Test." The DMV inspector can/will be very picky about what you need to do/have/demonstrate. It basically is what a OTR driver checklist would contain.

I am really interested in this 15 day permit. Can you provide more detail?? I have two friends who are avoiding the test due to no one to help them tow the RV to the DMV. You don't need someone with a Commercial Class A license, only someone with a license adequate to tow. Given the dirth of non-commercial guys, a commercial licensed friend is easier to find.

OK, this gets uglier and uglier every day. Seems like the dealers that sell you Montana's don't want you to know the facts. I called the Calif. DMV again today and asked them what would happen if I showed up at the commercial test center in Sacramento next week, and she said they would send me packing with my tail between my legs, if I did not show up with a Class "A" licensed person escorting me? WTH? So I pick up the Monty tomorrow, and then on this Friday I am taking it to my local DMV to register and pay taxes etc. Let's see if they give me any grief. If they do, I am not going to pay the taxes. The DMV pamphlet they gave me that outlines everything I need to know to pass the written tests, which I did, do not say any thing about having a Class "A" person escort you every time you tow your 5th wheel, until you pass the skills test? It is like I am 15 all over again rewind 44 years, and you have to have your parents with you while you have your permit, until you get your real license. So if anyone knows someone with a class "A" license that wants to earn $100/hour in the west Sacramento, CA area, next Friday the 12th, let me know.

I agree, I thought for sure the permit allowed you to drive it there! Guess I was wrong.

I got my son who is a CHP officer to get one of his Sacramento buddies to escort me. Hopefully showing up with a CHP officer with a class "A" license as my escort will give me some credibility?
