Changing flat on side of road.

So been searching post about tire changing flats on side of road . Right now i have a 6 ton bottle jack. Looking for a safer lightweight solution for changing flats . Are the plastic anderson rv lift worth it? Seen a few post about the homade wood ramps but is there something better out there ? Looking at aluminum floor jacks but even those are quite heavy. .
Thanks in advance
MJD

If you have hydraulic jacks, I lifted mine and took all 4 tires to get get balanced. They put 6oz on each tire. Hoping that will give it a smoother vibration free ride.

Have electric & not interested in lifting rv off the ground . Just looking for a safe light weight alternatives versus using a bottle jack on side of road.

I have a "Trailer Aid" ramp which is plastic and a metal version of the same that I can't remember the name of. Owned and used them both for well over a decade. Haven't used or carried a bottle jack since.

I’ve only had to do that once so far but the plastic square footings stacked 2 or 3 high allowed enough clearance to R and R the flat. After loosening the lug nuts I pulled forward onto the footing squares (i dont know what they are really callled). It worked good and really impressed my date!

I believe that the pretty fragile (see reviews) Andrsen leveling gadgets used for tire changing wont work with the MORryde center links. Those links have an additional 2 to 4 inches of extension. I have the heavier duty Beech Lane version that I use for CG leveling which are a bit higher then the Andersens and they will not lift the other, same side wheel and axle off the ground on our sig unit.

So, yes, you can make up a wood ramp - but I'll have to warn you that they will be awkward, heavy using at least 2x8 lumber (for stability) built to a useable height and they will take up lots of space vs an guesstimated 5x5x8 inch area for a 6T jack.

As always, your choice

as a side note, trying to get the spare tire out from under your rig is a challenge.
what I learned was if you can drop the tire remove from cable from the spare, then pull coach forward to expose the spare, when replaced just back the coach up over the tire to reattach to the carrier. beats trying to drag the tire out from under your coach.

Changing flats

I’ve used the metal ramp referenceed above several times that you can buy at tractor supply. The morryde spring makes axle travel too much to get other tire completely off ground so use small floor jack between u bolts on axle of tire changing to get enough clearance

Our electric trailer jacks won't lift our 372rd reliably to change a tires. I carry 2 regular car jacks and place under the trailer stabilizer jacks of the side with bad tire. I lift the middle, back, middle, back until the tires are up with the 2 jacks. I had these before fulltiming. If not, I might have bought 2 bottle jacks instead.

If you decide to go with the Rule Steel ramp, just make sure you get one high enough that the second tire will actually lift off the ground.

I made my own out of 6x6 lumber removed from an old barn. I thought the 6x6 would be high enough to bring the second tire off the ground. Nope, didn't even come close. I added 2 more layers of 2x6's (actually 1 and 1/2 inch thick) for a total of 3 additional inches of height. That's 8.5 inches the ramp tire had to raise for the second tire to get off the ground successfully. And this was completely level ground. And.... it's extremely safe. No fear of jacks slipping, sliding or a trailer crashing down.

I still carry that hunk of lumber with me all the time. I had more lumber I can make the block even taller, if needed, for example, on the side of the road and the trailer is leaning. It's going to take more than 8.5 inches to raise the bad tire. This is why lumber works well for me.

I really like the Rule Steel. I might check into them and see if they make a ramp that will lift 8.5 inches. To raise higher, I suppose you can always add lumber under them.

One thing to be aware of, is that when your tires were installed, they used an air wrench to tighten the lugnuts. You’ll need some sort of cheater bar to loosen them. Good Sam Roadside Assistance works well for me..

Looks good, but will it work with the Mor Ride suspension?

thanks for the nomination, just following an old tradition of "ask the lazy guy how to do it, he will find the easiest way"

A simple board placed under the ramp is all that's needed for extra lift if needed. Its quick and easy, no crawling around or under the camper and no jacking a jack. Much more stable. I feel its safer.

I use mine for maintenance on all our trailers. (bearings, breaks, tires)
So much faster and easier.
