Screws

Screws are coming out of the fiberglass under 5th wheel, just saw 2 laying in bed of pickup , almost like delaminating but there are 6 screws total, hopefully not stripped out!

If you're talking about the bottom of the cap where the pin box is, that panel is held in with screws and typically some are striped. Remove and replace with the next size up.

I've had several back out while traveling. Put a dab of silicone or Lexel on the screw threads and if necessary put a size larger diameter screw in. Should prevent the backing out again.

Checking screws for tightness is part of my normal pre-trip preparation. If we are on the road for several weeks, I usually check them several times during the trip. The screws in the fiberglass under the front are notorious for being loose as are the screws in the fender skirts. Be careful not to overtighten as that little extra turn may just strip them out. Another place to check is the J-wrap to the frame. Those are bolts, but they get a bit loose and the sheet metal wears a hole bigger than the bolt head and next thing you know, the j-wrap is flapping in the wind as you drive down the road!!

Check those screws routinely, especially the ones that hold the rear fender trim on. I ended up using SS screws with nylon lock nuts on those.

Check twice a year and any that are loose I add 5200 marine sealant around the screw and tighten, no more issues! If stripped go up one size but I still add the 5200.

We're getting ready to hit the road again for another 4 month "outing". We're leaving on May 27. I've been working frantically around the house getting things ready for our departure. Now that the rain has ended and the ground dried up a bit, I switched over the John Deere from Winter (snow blower), to Summer (mower) and was able to mow the grass, except for one spot that STILL has water standing. Rebuilt our Chicken Run because rain collapsed it, and doing all kinds of things around the house.

In the last 3 days, I've been able to focus on the camper (finally) getting ready to hit the road again. I've got everything done EXCEPT checking giving it a bath and checking the screws .... specifically .... the screws UNDER the camper, specifically ... those screws holding the J-panel on. I've got some minor metal twisting up under there where no screws were at all or a couple have fallen out. So, that's my next chore. ... check the underbelly attachment .... lots of screws, foamy expandable "Stuff" insulation, Liquid Nails and Calking. Get things sealed up again.

So... when checking those screws .... don't forget to look UNDER the camper. They wiggle loose and fall out under there too! Then remember to check the foamy "stuff" insulation and plugged holes that crumble, and things get bent up sometimes under there from rocks, and stuff.

It's a never ending check-list of stuff. But all necessary if we want to keep our campers operational and looking good!
