Steve, I usually don't have a problem with the fuel foaming out of the tank and running down the side. I hate the mess it makes when it does do that. The frustration I find is when the auto nozzle first kicks off the tank usually will take another couple of dollars of fuel. I have a VW TDI and it has a little lever inside the fuel neck that you push on with the nozzle. This releases pressure in the tank and really reduces the foaming but does not eliminate it. Just life with a diesel!!!

Brad, I just pull the nozzle out a little and ease the trigger on just a tiny bit and pump that additional gallon or two. If I overdo it then it'll shut off again but if I'm careful it works fine. I do the same thing with the small nozzle. I know you're not supposed to do this but rarely do we fill up and then drive just a couple of miles.

I do the same as you Steve. I don't think there's any other way around it except for what's on the VW TDI which still foams a little.

If we are going on a long trip I fill up four 5 gallon cans with diesel and haul them in the truck bed front. We have made 400 miles without getting off of the interstate with the extra 20 gallons. Even if we don't use them all on the trip they are a backup until we find a place to refuel. It is a pain lifting the cans but it is a lot cheaper than installing the truck fuel tanks.

I seem to have noticed that I get better mileage with lower quality diesel fuel. Does this make any sense?

5er: On the Interstate my Cummins with the 35 gal. tank is good for a little over 400 miles. We have a new Dodge 2500 ordered and we'll take it to Shasta and that might be a good test for it. The new one is identical to the one I now have but a 2005.

Ironman,
When I got the Ford in 2003 I was doing alot of traveling on the road.
So I put in a 70 gallon TransFlow bed tank.
It works off the the fuel sending unit in your main tank and when it gets to 1/2 a tank it kick a small transfer pump on and it pumps about .4 gpm. When the main tank gets about 3/4 it shuts off, takes about 20 minutes.
When we went to FL last month, we filled up in NJ, VA, GA, all the states with low fuel cost.
We traveled all around FL about 1400 miles with and without the trailer, put in about 35 gallons of fuel and that was enough to get me back to GA.
The cost of around $800.00 I think, I have made back by being able to purchase fuel at a state with lower fuel cost.
Yes, with the tank and fuel it adds about 800 lbs., with a F350 and Firestone Ride-Rights it isn't a problem.
