New Montana owner

After buying two motorhomes we just bought a 2018 3791RD. We are really excited to take it out for our first trip but having problems backing up. Any comments are welcome.

Try using your primary hand on the bottom of the steering wheel - as you watch in the mirrors, move your hand the direction you wan to move the back of the trailer. Hope that makes sense. If switching from the mirror to camera, it messes me up.

Welcome to the MOC. Go to a big empty parking lot, like a school or mall after hours when they are closed. Great place to practice without obstructions. If there are lines painted on the asphalt for a roadway, put the trailer tires on the line and backup while keeping the tires on the line and follow it where ever it goes. Practice, practice!

Welcome to the forum! Take your rig to a shopping center early in the morning when the lot is pretty empty. Plenty of room to practice and lines on the lot so you can shoot for putting the rig right where you want it.

I have heard that the longer the rig, the easier it is to back up. Watch the wheels of the trailer in your towing mirrors and watch where they go. One thing to keep in mind when backing a fifth wheel is that there is a bit of a delay from the time you make a correction (turn the steering wheel) and the time the trailer actually reacts. Most people have over-corrected by the time the trailer starts to move.

One maneuver we were taught at Lazydays in Tampa is this: If your trailer is well positioned, but your truck is at an angle to the trailer, then as soon as you move, the trailer will get out of position. The way to fix that is to move ahead (or back, depending on the situation) a very small amount while turning the truck wheels all the way in order to straighten out the truck. You may need to get your head around that one, but it works.

Regarding backing, I look at and react (turn) based on where I wanting my wheels/tires to end up and "drive them there" and only watching the end of the camper for trees, posts, obstacles, etc.

I first envision (angle/ark) where my wheels will have to travel to put my trailer where I want it, then I reverse turn to start down that path and follow/correct accordingly. I avoid jack knife if at all possible so not to slide tires, stress bearings, etc.

If my wife places a yellow stop block on the pad, I will put the wheel right on it.

Drive the tires where you want them.... the rest of the trailer just does what it does... follow.

And yes, big parking lot will help.

Even if having to jackknife, think where tires are going, when they have to turn to achieve the turn, and just do it.

I will always have a spotter though watching side of trailer I cannot see in my mirror if jackknifing one in just because you have to lose sight of that side for a long time and where you think something was changes when you get all catty whampus into a spot.
