*OMG!

I watched the entire video. I'm thinking the guy who was directing everything might have caused as much damage or more to the Montana than the driver did.

Thanks for sharing. It's a good reminder to watch for and trust road signs.

WOW!!! Destroyed their air conditioner and other damage in the tunnel then run off the road on a switchback. Probably $20K in damage. I'd also be surprised if they didn't do axle and/or frame damage pulling sideways with that winch. If his insurance company sees this video, he may not have ins. after this.

Just watched the whole thing. It's a real wonder someone didn't get hurt. Cable break, hook break of come loose, who knows what break off the Monty, not to mention watching the dude "in charge" hopping back and forth over the cable. A great, and expensive, lesson in things not to do.

Well I understand the damage done going through a tunnel not built for these rigs, what I don't understand is why he could not navigate that corner, there was lots of room to make the corner, seems he cut it too short.
The yoyo giving all the directions caused more problems than he solved and likely damage to the undercarriage as well. Reminds me of some of the volunteers in RV parks that are assigned to assist you in getting parked.
I tell them to stand at the back of trailer and the only thing I want from them is to not let me go back too far. If they start trying to tell me how to back up I get out of my truck and tell them to leave.

Hope the rest of the road was kinder to the poor chappy...

Winch cables can kill. Very dangerous situation. A dual winch tow truck heavy, with proper snatch blocks 4, could have kept him off the guard rail. As for damage to the undercarriage, not enough information. God forbid we find ourselves in such a situation, but if we do, we should call roadside immediately. Most times when things like you see here happen, it just causes damage that a good towman probably could prevent. They did a good job with what they had. IMHO

If you look at the skid marks he left going into that corner, first he was going way too fast and second, it looked like he skidded into that ditch probably trying to avoid a car coming the other way around that corner. Could have made the corner if he had waited till it was clear and used both lanes. Sorry, past LEO experience coming out. Trying to diagnose accidents from the skid marks.

That was my first thought when I saw the winch pulling the RV sideways.

I have had plenty of experiences dealing with human males who are an extension of their pickup truck. These folks are generally better off left to enjoy the ego rush gained by playing with their trucks, alone. They do OK when they can satisfy this needy ego on the roads (alone) at the hunting camp, or in a huge mud hole somewhere. Some of us get this rush when we successfully tow huge campers across part of the USA.

Some get this ego fix by being the boss in a situation like this. That guy definitely demonstrated his expertise in the science of the direction that an object will move when enough force is applied. I would say he knew very little about how fragile the axle configuration of the RV was, or about the geometry of the TV steer axle in relation to the direction he was backing while pushing. When I see a samaritan that has neither a calm air, or the ability to facilitate ideas from the brain power of the other samaritans, I quickly find something at the scene to keep their dangerous, controlling personality away from the critical activity.

This scene also concerns me, in that i can end up in a situation like this if i do not pre-plan and assess my routes.

Should not have been there and there was plenty of advance warning. Lesson learned...Be alert know were you are going. Do the homework.

Call me silly, but if there were signs that said "NO TRAILERS". That might be an indication that it might be time to reconsider the route! MHO

Look below the story. In the comments a person named Mary Ellen Brogdon posted it was their rig and besides thanking those who helped, gave explanation of what happened to them and how they got in that mess.

Bottom line, it was lack of planning and not seeing the signs. If the signs are there and you don't see them, oops. And another good reason that you do plan your route ahead of time especially if the roads and route are new to you. "Swamp foxing" with your trailer in tow is NOT a good idea. Then driving awareness and observation are critical enroute.

The tunnel looked like the one on the pig tail road by Mt Rushmore. It is for sure not a RV road.

This is on the Needles Hwy in the Black Hills. I used to drive Grey Line tour buses through those tunnels in the mid 70's and saw a lot of crazy things, but nothing this bad. I had a box full of marker lights and broken mirrors from smaller RV's that I showed the tourists to heighten the thrill of the tunnels. This is a great lesson on how not to do things. Luckily no one was hurt helping out.

After completing our trip to Florida and observing a couple unsafe RV folks along the way, this video doesn't shook me in the least. We were only on I-10 for a couple of hours but it was windy so you had to pay attention. The first idiot was pulling a long TT with a Tahoe. The Tahoe was extremely overloaded with the rear about 6" off the ground. He was weaving and fish tailing back and forth so much he was going off onto the should constantly and into the left lane! Traffic was actually backed up because you had to pick your timing to gun it and get around him. A few miles down the road here comes a new SOB fiver (young family with kids) running between 80 and 85! It is not too hard to see how the RV community can get a bad reputation sometimes.
