Hook UP Monty With Slides Out
At a recent campground, I watched a fellow Monty owner hook up the new Monty to his truck with the slide out--OUT. I have never done this and don't know why someone would -- except in some special case. Are the NEW Montys designed for this type of treatment? or I am I missing something??

Am I missing something? What is wrong with hooking up with the slides out. We do it. DW is inside finishing packing and controlling the dogs, while I am outside doing my thing. We finish about the same time. She checks my outside work and I check her inside work with the checklist. Then, we bring in the slides, lock the doors, and away we go. Comments?

I don't see a problem as long as truck/Monty will be fairly level after hooking up.

Not sure if it is in Montana owners manual, but I have read in one of my trailer's manuals to level trailer before moving slides. I was in a park and tried to help another camper that their big slide stuck part way in and would not move either with electric power or manually. With a lot of persuasion it finally went in. He was hooked up and off level when he started moving slide. Not sure what brand it was, but I always try to be close to level just to be on the safe side. One of my fears is to be ready to leave somewhere and have a slide hang up and have to deal with it when I am wanting to go. On the other hand I see many brands at dealerships that are not level and all slides are out.

Please explain to me what is wrong or unsafe about bringing in the slides after you have hooked up. We have been doing this for 6 years and have never found a problem. The main reason we do it is so we do not have a flat cat. We want them out before closing slides. I'm with Captain Joe.

We do it often for some of the same reason Captain Joe mentions. As long as the rig is fairly level I don't see a safety issue. Now I wouldn't endorse this but on two occassions we saw people move their rig with the slide out. One moved a couple of blocks in a state park to a new site, the second turned the 5'er 180 degrees so the sun would melt the ice off the top of the slide so he could retract it and move on. Jim

I always hookup with slides out..wife does inside & I do outside. We never put slides out until trailer is level & at least a couple of jacks are in place.

With our truck/trailer set up we are always fairly level for the hook up process and because of that we have hooked up many times with one or even all the slides still out. Most times we have the bedroom area packed up 1st and it comes in right away before hooking up, after that it varies depending what still needs to be done. Basically my DW does the inside and I do the outside hook up proceedures, same as Captain Joe.

Like many others, I frequently hook up with the slides out. DW is often still inside finishing what she has to do while am hooking up. By the time she finishes, I am often ready to go on the outside.
Don't see any reason it would do any harm to anything.

OK! I found my 2 cents! Tim we hook up often before we get the slides in. Heck one time I even moved the coach with the slides out! By the way I do not recommend that and have not done it since. I only had to move it about two feet. Anyway I think it is safe to hook up while slides are still out. The coach needs to be relatively level... But then it should already be pretty level so there should be no problem.
Anyway that's my story and I'm sticking with it. Happy Trails, Dennis.

I hook up with the slides out and have never had a problem. Our scenario sounds the same as Captain Joe and others that have chimed in on this topic.

Put me in the "slides out" column. In fact, can't remember the last time I hooked up with them in, for the same reasons others have stated. Going on 9 years with that technique and no noted adverse outcome.

I believe the obvious word here is "level". Who will be the first to indorse moving the slides with either a lateral or fore/aft misalignment or "not level" condition.

I have always had the slides in before hooking up. But, at the dealership I work at and I suppose all other dealerships, they move the units around on the lot with the slides out all the time. Heck, even here at the service center, they move the Montanas around with the slides out. So, I'd say, as long as it's close to level, it wouldn't hurt or they wouldn't do it!

We are on the slides in side. Just the way we've always done it, I guess.

We always hook up with the slides out. Of course, we always level the trailer when we arrive so it is level when we hook up.

WOW guys, I need one of those trucks that are so level all I need to do is lower the legs and pull away and the RV is level front to back. Then I can just back up, hitch up and raise the legs and I'm off. Sounds silly doesn't it and almost impossible to do. My point is, most of us must come off level to hitch up. I doubt if anything is tweeked hitching up from a fairly level surface. Sometimes we find ourselves in really nose high or low conditions where we max up or down the legs to get hitched. What's OK for some may not be OK for others hence my caution telling less experienced folks it's OK to hitch up with four slides hanging out. JMHO

Hi
We were at the rally at Marion NC and watched a Class “A” drive from one side of that very large facility to the other with all the slides out. He even had to go under the bridge to get from the maintenance side of the facility to the sales side. He was coming from maintenance to the sales lot. No one seemed to be able to tell me at the sales office what the object of that maneuver was!
