Our "BAM" was not a tire! NEW INFO

Today, climbing a long mountain on I-17 north of Phoenix, we heard a loud "BAM" and felt a tremor on the floor. We were able to pull to a wide spot on the shoulder and found the tires were OK, no leakage of liquids, trans and engine temp OK. Started out again into traffic and couldn't get above 10-15 MPH and keep the RPMs down and the turbo was showing 0 RPMs with the enging screaming so we limped a few miles up until a rest area at the top. Called Good Sam and they found us a nearby campground and our truck and Monty were towed to the CG. A State Trooper took Carol, Sunshine and me to the CG. The truck was then taken to a repair facility that opens tomorrow. Tried Skyping the kids and grandkids and couldn't make a connection. We are happily set up in a nice CG now and all is will. That was how we spent our Easter. How did you spend yours?
NEW: Just got back from the repair shop with our TV. The clamp holding the intake hose for the turbo broke and the loud "BAM" that we heard was when the vacuum was compromised when the hose came off. Total, $130. Good Sam paid for tow. We are very grateful and pleased that things worked out as they did.

So, that happens on Fords too? That's exactly what I was thinking.

Jim if it rains it pours! Glad to hear you and Carol had Good Sam come to the rescue, are in a CG and safe. Did you also experience the earthquake while you were set up or were you still on the road when it happened in the area? We had guests over for Easter and one of their friends living in Phoenix text messaged her and told her about it. They said it made the recliner walk across the floor and created waves in the pool and caused the water to splash out of the pool also! Hope you guys are OK and we'll hopefully see you guys when you hit Nebraska.

Boylanag, I know that route and have towed it a few times. It is wicked steep going up and going down and will definitely take your TV to the limit. There are many of this ascent/descents for many miles outside of Phoenix. I'm sorry to hear you had this problem and it does sound like something turbo related. On the uphills I have to watch my turbo closely since it goes up to the high end and on the downhills, then you have to watch the RPMs on the downhill as you downshift.

Since my TV is very similar to yours (just one year newer and a long bed) I hope you share what you find just for awareness sake.

Sorry to hear of the problem you guys have encountered. Hopefully it will be a small fix and you will be back on the road soon. I know when our turbo hose popped off it definitely put us out of commission until it was fixed. As already mentioned let us know what happened for awareness sake. I definitely hope it’s an easy fix for you.

On Edit: BTW, you asked how our Easter went. I was at work all day Sunday.

could it have been the intercooler hose blowing off I hear if you push on a hill to hard, this could happen, ford has that problem with the early hoses I hope thats all it was it is a less expensive fix. at least you were safe and had help.

I had added it to my original message. Busted clamp for intake hose to turbo, causing hose to pop off breaking the vacuum. - Jim

Thanks for the posting the results. I think $130 for the fix is a lot less than what it could have been. While that might sound like a lot for fixing a clamp, with so many other high cost possibilities I hope I am just as fortunate in the event of a crisis.

I hope you can now get on the road very soon. Stay safe and take care!

We are not complaining a bit about the price. We got off very nicely and found a nice, quiet campground to stay in until the wind dies down. Life just gets better!

Jim, That is good news. I imagine it could have been worse. In the grand theme of things $130 is a drop in the bucket when it comes to dealing with diesel engines....Glad you are ready to roll again.

That same thing happened to my old ford the guy ( Russ )who purchased it pushed it to hard and blew it off, he had to wate untill the motor cooled down, it was to hot to work on at the time it happened. Sure glad you got it fixed at a reasonable price. is your TV chipped? mine was causing the boost to get too high for the crappy hose clamps that they use for the intake.

Thanks, all, for your kind words. Don, we just got this truck a couple of months ago and, to my knowledge, it is not chipped. The guy from the repair shop said that this happens quite frequently, more in Dodges than others. Said it is probably just a stress fracture. He is at the top of a 5 mile, 6% grade so I imagine he sees a lot of stress problems. He does repair work for the Arizona State Police which are as stressed a fleet as one could find.
