Tried to get through a small space

Well, I did it. I tried to get our Montana through an alley in Oak Park, IL that was a little too narrow in the entry way. Scraped the curb side of the rig pretty bad. Need a new door and frame, hot water heater, safety handle, storage door, and lots of fiberglass work. Also needed new decals.
Mora: Make sure the space you're going into is big enough to get through.
National Interstate handled the claim which amounted to about $3500. My diminishing deductible was down to $277 so it didn't cost too much out of pocket. However, premiums will increase about $160/year for next three years.
I called Team Montana in Customer Service and talked to Art to find out who they would recommend to fix the rig. Without hesitation, Art said, "Call D&T RV Repair in Goshen, IN." I did and they set me up with an appointment for the first day I could get to Goshen. What a magnificent job Tom and his crew at D&T did on our rig. It only took them a day and a half and we were allowed to stay in our rig at night. If you ever need repairs (and I hope you don't) we, Marge and I, heartily recommend D&T RV Repair in Goshen, IN.

I'm sorry for your mishap but glad it got fixed. I was feeling really bad about our little mishap and it is so minor compared to your. We have a scratch on the Monty and lost the corner of the garage tile roof. Both can be fixed easily. Ed only has a couple of inches on each side to put Monty in his spot.
Happy trails.........................

Orv,
I know how sick you guys were about the accident, but the important thing is that you weren't hurt, and it was fixable. We will all learn from the incident.
Take care, Ozz

Oh my! I feel bad for you. We did nearly the same thing on our first test run with the Monty a couple years ago. Cut a corner too sharp. New door, new frame.

Sorry about the problem Orv but thanks for the info.

On one of my first trips, we were in the hills of West Virginia and I took a turn to sharp and nudged a tree. I was fortunate in that all I got was some tree bark and damaged pride. The bark came off ok.

Yes, it would have been an excuse Dave, but the available money isn't there. Also, although the 2007's are nice, we haven't found another rig anywhere, any manufacturer that measures up to what we have. My wife is a graphic artist and this rig has a HUGE computer desk with plenty of space above in cabinets and below in cabinets for her "stuff." Plus we have upgraded the axles to 7,000 lb Mor-Ryde Individual Suspension; have four 125-watt solar panels installed, as well as done a lot of other things that make the rig more livable like adding a 4-shelf bookcase in the empty spot between where the large slideout comes in and the reefer wall.

Marge is preparing "before and after" pictures that I'll add to this topic probably tomorrow

Orv; I have a kind of a dumb question: Aren't your mirrors wider than your trailer. My mirrors would hit the wall before the trailer. Glad it was fixed to your satisfaction, though.

Bob, no question is dumb. It's how we all learn, by asking those questions that probably more than half the rest of the people would like to ask. You just got there first.

The problem was caused by a pole with a huge SBC telephone box hanging off it that somebody had hit and swung it into the alley. That's what I hit. My mirrors are the Ford "Swing Away" mirrors on which I have the stick-on mirrors attached to the corners that allow me to see directly into my blind spots. There was plenty of room for the truck to get through and, if I had been watching my right side closer I would have seen the box hanging down. As it was, I was just a little careless. Lesson learned. There's an old saying, "We get too soon old and too late smart." But I'm one of those guys that maintains that "you can teach an old dog new tricks." You can bet your last dollar that I'll be more alert from now on.

I think we all get a little complacent as we travel, especially those of us who are on the road continuously. We take a lot of things for granted instead of practicing real safety all the time.

Thank everyone for their consoling words and concern.

Orv ? Marge
